James yes the car went for the clutch rattle in October, when I picked it up I was told the clutch, flywheel and a drive shaft had been replaced. I had asked for the transfer box connecting shaft to be checked but got no paperwork for anything when picking it up and the receptionist although helpful didn't have any paperwork so I left with nothing and little info. I have since been busy and forgot about it but contacted them last week and within a couple of days got a work sheet that included the parts already listed, I checked the numbers and it is the shaft and flange between the gearbox and t/fere box. Little worrying as the car had done less than 13k and was clonky for much longer.(only off road once on your none damaging Wales trip and towed a trailer once with a series 3 for about 100 miles and otherwise driven very gently) I never saw the old parts so don't know how bad it was but the difference in transmission play is very noticeable. I'm just hoping GS have greased it well and that it will not return. If it does I will be going to Ashcrofts for the oil fed version they do which is about £500 fitted or £250 in parts. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS, I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

I did about 85k miles on number three, and when it came out you could wriggle one of the springs out by hand and the others were very loose. It wasn't good!

Can the shaft splines be checked easily without too much dismantling? And if it is knackered is it a DIY job to change ie box out but not a complete rebuild)
Reason for asking is a I have a mechanical click as I release the clutch and having done all the drive flanges I'm suspecting the input shaft. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X |

Hi Munch90.
So to clarify two issues: The friction plates springs tend to go from 50k onwards (or 13k as seen above) Plus the gbox output shaft should be checked for wear if drive becomes an issue, if its worn due to lack of lub it can be changed with the gbox in situ just needs the T box removing. Ashcrofts do an uprated gbox output shaft that overcomes the lack of lube problem? Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Yes gearbox to transfer box spline can be checked/ changed without removing main box
i took my transfer box out to check spline all looked ok so just packed with grease and refitted if your doing a clutch then it would make sense to check and grease spline at same time |

Seal release nearly scuppered by faulty Land Rover - Click image to enlarge THE release of six rescued seal pups was very nearly scuppered after the clutch went on the Land Rover which was transporting them to Gwithian Beach. http://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/12913...and_Rover/ |

Is it possible to get the gearbox out and back in (main box and transfer box separately) on a trolley jack or am I going to need an engine crane? 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Yes it is entirely possible. I did mine working out of doors on my drive, with the vehicle on its wheels.
I used a transmission jack similar to this one (this isn't the actual one, it's the first picture Google threw up) instead of a trolley jack since it is better suited to supporting the transmission. With the vehicle on its wheels you can get the transfer box out from underneath, but there isn't enough clearance between the chassis and the ground to get the main gearbox out. If you are just doing the clutch and output shaft it doesn't matter since you can take the transfer box off and remove it from under the vehicle, then unbolt the main gearbox and, supporting it on the jack, lower it and roll it back to get enough room without taking it out from underneath. Alternatively just jack the vehicle up when you need to slide the box out. It is actually easier to do than to describe! There are two special tools though which help a lot, one of which is easy enough to fabricate, the other not so. The first, which is easy to make, is a wedge-shaped adaptor to provide a flat horizontal surface under the transfer box. See here. The second is the gizmo to hold the outer part of the adaptor shaft joint while you undo the (very tight) nut that holds it to the gearbox. This is harder to fabricate. I imagine that many of the people here who have replaced the shaft managed without, and can probably comment on how they managed without it. See here. Note that the JLR service tools are supplied by Bosch Automotive and are not easily available to the general public! |

Thanks for the replies.
Yes .. doing it on the floor hopefully not jacked up (not going to fit undercover jacked up) I think I'll give it a go with a trolley jack rather than purchasing / borrowing an engine lift. Blackwolf .. thanks for the tool tips. Any ways around not having to need the special locking tool ? .. quite pricey for a one off use. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X |
