I do like seeing novel solutions to issues and how people come up with new ideas for storage

You may need a cage to protect you when you fall over, but the weight of this thing makes you fall over.
At a certain point it just becomes too much. Nice craftmanship but not for me. |

I'm not sure those little angle brackets that the vertical posts sit on will be up to much in the event of a roll. The 2 spare wheels are mounted high too which isn't going to help maintain a low CoG.

I do not quite get it...
Why modify the roof so extensively but then bring up the cog again with those 2 heavy wheels high up? And wonder if that cage really is so protective when it gets to it... Not for me... Imagine trying to lift a wheel onto those carriers!
Nice work, and innovative though. |

What I do like is the way the back opens.

I don't think the roof mod is for CoG, it's probably more to do with reducing the height, the drag and protecting the tent. I think that's an innovative approach although it's not something I'd want to do. I wonder if it can squeeze into a normal height container as a result - probably. We had to take our roof tent off and ship it on a palette and refitting/removing it on the dock side at each end is a pain. the roof tent also means you're over the 2.1 metre mark which makes access to car parks a pain sometimes when you end up looking for provisions in a city. I don't really like the spare wheel carriers that high up as others have said but it's just one of those compromises you have to make for practical reasons. I'd have wanted them lower and moved the lights of necessary but then our solution was just to carry one spare and a demounted tyre on the roof which could then be stuffed full of other light weight items. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I think this truck is quite innovative, be great to see it with the bar work gone and what other little bits are done.
The wheels are no higher then what the army does, just mounted in a different spot. And lets face it, if you mont them on the rear door or bonnet you break both of them due to LR's poor design. Plus if you are checking under the bonnet each morning you soon get sick of a spare there, no matter how cool it looks. Perhaps these days with good quality tires, and the way they are made; one spare and a decent supply of tire plugs will see you through most debacles. He might have used 50mm roll cage seamless pipe as I did for my sliders and brush bars, a lot thinner, lighter, stronger, but expansive as well. I like the wheels to, they look LR but different on a Defender. Are they Disco ?. My Defender and travels |
