In my experience the bumpers are rusty before they leave the factory.
It will certainly help to under seal them at the same time as getting the chassis done. |

I got a new bumper for my older defender and painted the front then dinitrolled the back and I've not had any rust in the last two years. It's just the cheap paint finish from Landrover that causes them to rust so fast.

Hello Cadence
and so it begins...you are right (in my opinion) Land Rover really should do better, and may do better with the replacement Defender at sending it out the door with a tough, fit-for-purpose all over protection, especially for the metal bits underneath. Some look to have only been shown the spray gun... with the accompanying comment that 'this is reserved your more expensive stable mates'. Front Bumper, rear Cross Member, All Running Gear will often show early signs of deterioration. Your under body corrosion prevention exercise (if done correctly) will address most of this but the outer coating of paint on the rear cross member and front bumper may need to be tackled at some point early in life. Get a good quality paint and apply it properly or take it to a body shop who can apply a two pack paint to get a really tough finish. I did all of the above to mine with 10K on the clock. The Front Bumper should also be taken off as part of the anti-corrosion treatment and the inner surfaces (including the hidden areas) should be protected too... this is mine after the Dinitrol treatment. (my front bumper has a vinyl outer wrap which I thought would be rubbish but I have been surprised how good it's been) Good Luck... ![]() Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Many thanks for the valuable feedback.
BTW when you say 'Vinyl Wrap' do you mean clear paint protection film like 3M Venture Shield or Armourfend? |

One of my favourite mods is my DRL bumper from FCX it's much thicker than the standard wafer thin bumper. well worth the money in my opinion!

Or… do nothing.
It’ll be a good few years before any rusted bodywork will become dangerous or an MOT failure, by which time your truck will be worth whatever it’s worth. Yes, Dinitrol, AC-50, bling it up all you want, and it may (just may) delay the re-chassis by a couple of years or convince a punter to pay a few quid more than Glass’s Guide. But by that time you’ll have had your use out of it, the repairs and unreliability will in any case be taking its toll, and you’ll be only too glad to get rid of it for something new. If your time is as precious as mine - take bumpers off and paint them? Yeah, I should think so - for as long as it works, looks good and makes others envious, use and abuse it, hump it and dump it, spend as little money on it as you can get away with, and then let somebody else take over the headaches. Hi Cadence
Close... mine has a few areas with 3M Carbon Fibre Vinyl applied, Silver Graphite Spec' which is very (very) similar to the Stornoway Grey of mine and so overall looks 'colour coded' to match, all cosmetic I know, but ok I think, (at first glance you almost don't see it). Front Bumper, Steering Guard, Wheel Arches, Bonnet and Roof... 3M Vinyl ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Looks great - I Hope mine looks that good.
I much prefer to treat my vehicles well from the outset rather than the 'let them rust and flog it' approach that was also suggested. |

Hi again Cadence
Totally agree and it's a Defender after all... ![]() Use it the way you want to, but a bit of front end protection and the occasional bit of TLC along the way coupled with a strong resale value and you have a fairly sound investment... ![]() After a Series III, I looked at a nearly new 300tdi Vs a new one and decided to go for new as there was so little in it. Had it for 19 years without issue and sold it to get the Puma, in terms of depreciation the 300tdi cost Ł375 / PA, unless you have a classic car that appreciates in value, that's not bad. The Puma is staying around also, but here's its predecessor... ![]() Click image to enlarge Enjoy yours SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Supposedly this bumper should resist corrosion more than a standard one:

Thanks again for all the feedback - undoubtably worrying more than I need to. Probably the hefty price that gives me the sweats

I wouldn't bother trying to weather proof the original bumper, they're very soft and bend on the slightest of nudges which will crumple your wing. Better to ditch it and get a like-original bumper made of something more substantial (5mm steel I think is what I got) and have a little confidence that your bumper will actually be able to bump something and not bend.

Just let the bumper do its thing...
The dealer's know they replace them at 3 years old just before the warranty runs out.. along with headlamp rings, rusty mirror arms and any rusty door bolts. I just build up a list and then hand it over..No issues at all Clemmo Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow.... Defender 90 HT............Pangea Green BMW X3 Msport............Carbon Black Mini Electric................Grey. (wow!) MGB Roadster……..........Vermillion 17k miles Honda Benly CD200....Maroon --------McLouis Fusio........7.4m of fun |
