Puma maf question
Is tdci maf cosidered to be "expendable",ie should be replaced everynow and then?
I know -from my td5 days- that maf sensor gradually ages so performance and economy.
I recently swaped and old maf sensor previous owner gave me-the dealer kept repalcing them when check engine light was on for the usual (in range but higher or lower than expected) issue,so a spare was saved..
Although the maf was used,i saw quite a difference in drivability and performance in low rev range,so i was thinking of investing in a new one..
Any thoughts?

I thought the same as you, as am used to the Td5, but I was told by Gary at Alive that this is not the case with Tdci's.

Initially i thought it was placebo effect but it lasts for two weeks now so i am sure there is a performance difference.

The MAF in a TDCi plays an important role as it is one of the critical inputs which the controller use to create the load requirement of the engine.This in turn feeds in to the fuel calculator which can have adverse effects on drivability if not within range of original calibration map.It is not designed as a throw away item and is not schedule for replacement after a certain number of miles.There are several things which affect the performance of the MAF,

ie:Your intake hose can be loose or leaking which affects the flow characteristic of the sensor,the sensor is then replaced for a range fault,the new one is installed correctly and everything is ok once again.

Another can be voltages,if the correct reference is not going to the sensor the feedback will be out of range.

Scotland 
Travelling from Hereford to glasgow . Total loss of power and engine warning light comes on .
Pull over and ignition off and back on , then drives as normal with light staying on
Same again every 40 miles all the way back home . ( a very long drive home )
Dealer has it and says it's the MAF sensor to blame and new one fitted .

Sometimes just cleaning the senser will give it a new lease of life
