As if we didn't have enough problems with the Land Rover quallity we have aquirred an additional problem called Garrett..
After the repair i did almost a year ago http://www.defender2.net/forum/post325992.html#325992 and after reading many-many posts on various forums,i was conviced(and as many reported) that once the turbo flange disorts-wraps and getting it fixed, it wouldn't happen again...wishful thoughts... Yesterday i was inestigating a exaust gas smell and i found this.. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I am ULTRA causious with the EGT's,i have lowered the alarm on madman to 650 celcious(probe on downpipe-after the turbo) and for th last 10.000 kms i've reached this limit 10 times max for seconds (or a 1.5 minute TOTTALY for those 10.000 kms) I accept the fact that my puma is tuned BUT i drive accordingly but i also read reports for leaky turbo gaskets and warranty repairs even on untuned pumas. My conclusion is that Garrett produced this turbo version for pumas with very wrong specs on the thickness of the flange on the cast iron turbine housing, how else is this(wraping issue) possible to happen all over to many pumas again and again.. Ok,let's say that i do it all wrong IF i get a new turbo and IF i return my puma to factory specs, how long will it last? Or let's say i get a new hybrid-improved turbo by a reputable tuner, the cast iron part is still made by Garret and with the same specs,so what's the deal here? Any suggestions? Thanks. BTW The studs, the special nuts and nakatanenga gasket stood up very well for the last 10.000 kms.. |

ok I know cat has bottom mounting being its a lot heavier then decat pipe , but thought may pipe was putting bit extra load on the the turbo mounting flange

When you look at the various VGT hybrid turbos available the one made for the 300TDI the flange looks a hell of a lot more robust. Wonder why the design was changed or if it can be adapted or upgraded to take this issue into account? I am not turbo savvy but recognise a 'beefier flange' when I see one.
I would like a hybrid turbo but am perhaps reluctant to change my standard turbo out when it is running fine and when you hear of other people's issues. Sorry for your plight and obvious frustations. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

New-used-turbo from transit.
Appears to have minimum use-mileage but WTF -the triangle flange is disorted on this too!!! Thanks Mr.Garrett It's flat near the center hole(exhaust gases input) but on the outer side, the bottom left corner is disorted out by 1,4 mm!! So my new theory is that this side disorts first, when on OE retaining studs and nuts, the studs stretch and the nuts go out together with the turbo gasket so crank shaft sensor heat shiel gets smokey first-it's under this side. Now with the upgraded studs and nuts, the flange instead of getting disorted it just cracked of its base(the turbo housing) - the studs i used last time didn't stretch at all! So even after an initial disort and repair it happened again as it will on the second hand turbo i got - hopefully not Click image to enlarge So there must be some transits with similar issues out there.. |
