The fact that there was such a thick layer of dust in the turbo inlet and pipe makes me worried as hell.
.........

Have you a photo of turbo inlet and turbo intake?

No I don't - It was a definate brown dust with slight oil mixture

some slightly better news.
Spoke to three indy LR mechanics today who told me not to worry and only the turbo blades if anything could be affected. They told me just to change the oil for safety and clean out the hoses.
One mechanic told me he did the same some months back to a disco that had such a badly blocked filter that it had burst open and filled the system with plenty dust.
I am supposed to check that the intake blade tips are still square and sharp.
I could only get in with my camera due to the angle and have taken these snaps below. Edges look a little rounded but the mechanic may not be farmiliar with the Puma turbo. Question
Anyone like to offer their opinion on the turbo condition?
The other snap shows the dust/oil mix in the turbo inlet elbow which I am going to clean as well as the turbo inlet as bet I can in that space.
I dropped the intercoller for a chemical wash and will change the oil and filter tomorrow and assemble everything again.

Looking much better now. Just a little more on the blades.

Just for interest sake - anyone feel like doing a check for me.

Take off the inlet hose at the manifold and stick your finger in too see how much gunk is in the steel pipe section. (easy 10min job)
I would love to know if mine is the only one that has oil and soot in there.

She is all back together and running ok all be it still very jerky when cold.
I am glad I took off the intake manifold as it was caked in soot. Luckily the dust and oil seemed to have only collected at the 90 degree bend and it was only dry soot from there on in.
I degreased the inside and high pressure washed it. Seals are very supple and after a wipe with wet rag and a dry I refitted them to the manifold and bolted everything up.
Filled up with some nice clean low sulphur diesel and will see how she goes this week.
Now I need to find why the diff lock lamp is not working.
I jacked her up and tested the diff lock lever and she is definately working, just the sensor. Probably some mud in the switch - will have a look see.
I had booked her in for the diff lock so I will ask them to see if the EGR is faulty and causing the jerking. It was jerking before the dust saga so I assume unrelated.

My airfilter cover was not fitted correctly at the second service by the maindealer. It was the part under the top wing nearest the outer wing that was not fitted properly. The engine sounded very loud or somehow different. I always check everthing after a service. It is amazing what I have had to do over the years. Always check this after your service especially if it raining when you pick her up! By the way this is one of the most educational post I have seen in years-better than a Haynes manual! Hope there is no damage done but you seem to have everthing in hand. Someone should download this post and give to some of our inept maindealers. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

it is sufficient a little by-pass of the MAF (when the engine is under load the inlet manifold is in pressure so the air will return back)

I'm thinking about this............. Twisted Evil Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition
