I have been doing a lot of off road driving recently and noticed that after using low range 2d, 3rd, 4th for a couple of hours my engine starts to sound like a 1980's transit, pinking and knocking badly under power.
Once back in normal road conditions the sound continues for about 100 miles or so and then quietens down again. Any ideas ? Bob Last edited by bob neville on 11th Oct 2010 7:25pm. Edited 2 times in total |

Oil level is full, only serviced a couple of months ago.
Oil was my first thought as well but I am checking the level every day at present just in case. Only stupid idea I had was something like the EGR valve, becoming messed up with the slow running and then clearing in normal use. Can't see why that would make the engine rattle like a bag of nails though. Bob |

Shell Fuel Save strikes again !!
As I could not get V-power diesel, I had been filling up with Fuel Save. Apart from my MPG dropping to 23/24 it would appear that the fuel was the cause of the knocking from my engine. With a half tank of V-power through the engine things are back to normal - 28 mpg + and no knocking noise Now where did I put trading standards phone number Bob Last edited by bob neville on 11th Oct 2010 8:10pm. Bob, how are you finding V-power, ive just moved away from Shell to BP to see if its the fuel as ive noticed less mpg and a more "noisy" engine with shell, although i did get 27mpg from the last tank - the rest have all been 23/24 agains 28/29 Mike |

I've also just moved to BP but will wait until the next tank once all the shell has been burnt through to see what my MPG is.
I have however already noticed the engine is a quieter! Russell 2011MY 110 XS USW Black |

Mike I find V-power a good fuel, SWHMO uses it in her Porsche as well and gets good MPG and performance from it. In my 110, I get 28+ mpg and no 'transit' knocking from the engine. I used BP coming back from Yorkshire recently and still had knocking from the engine but this was probably the remnants of Fuel Save' going through. When we use Fuel Save in the Porsche we get engine knock as well - I see a pattern here ! Bob |

Our 110 drinks almost exclusively BP and we have not had any problems with it. No Shell garages near us so don't have any experience of Fuel Save.
No probs with Esso either. |

We only have Shell locally - we are rather rural ! I have used BP in the past and not had any problems. I think I will see what Shell have to say and then onto dog watch Bob |

I was toying with contacting them - have you? If it was better, i would hope to see some benefit on one of the cars! We will see how bp does...it maybe a penny more, but it just adds to the nectar points. Mike |
