Slight Header Tank Leak
I have had my Puma 2.4 for a month now and noticed that the header tank is loosing a little coolant from the cap, so tightened it up after topping up and it still has a slight leak (slight dribble down the side) .

I have bought a replacement header cap from Land Rover but it still has a leak, but less. If you wipe a tissue round the cap there is a slight red stain of coolant.

The manual says “Make sure the cap is tightened fully after top up completed”.

My question is how tight should it be? Just hand tight or as tight as you can get it?

I have in the meantime ordered a new header tank just in case the screw-thread is fubared. BTW the temperature gauge is as expected after 60 miles, and the car is not overheating.

Ditto .... And on this occasion a pattern part cap seems to work better than the genuine article 😉 Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

I use a cooling system tester with a cap adaptor. I have tested many genuine and replacement caps and most of them do not work correctly. They either let air out at a lower pressure than the 15psi or they slowly leak. The current cap I use is a genuine one but I did throw away another new genuine one as it did not hold 15psi.

I believe both scenarios are not good for a 2.4 Puma. If the cap does not pressurise the system correctly then in my experience you will eventually blow the head gasket. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP
