Finally got round to downloading the few snaps I took.
Firstly thanks to Craig for organising yesterday. My other half was a little concerned when she saw the diff guards, snorkels, tree sliders and winches on the Chris truck, then Craig rolled in, wearing the same accessories, but all the tracks were exactly as Craig had outlined. Although I don't think she'll be joining any trips out any time soon, as at 7 months pregnant she wasnt very comfortable. Meeting up with Chris and Craig has hopefully dispelled the image of old men with beards that she has in her head Anyway a couple of snaps from me Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge We popped into Bakewell on our way home and found this in the car park Click image to enlarge Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Awesome dedication to introducing the 'youth' of today to the wonders of Defender ownership. Not even taken their first breath yet already an experienced 'green-laner'. Just glad he/she wasn't able to bare witness to that green blob you spotted in Bakewell Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

I got a bit worried when I noticed your other half was pregnant, but then remembered, it's ok as we had a winch, tool kit, towel and WD40 between us should we need to deliver a baby! Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Never been over to the Peaks as you hear so much about the anti 4x4 brigade, but did not look like you came across any tut tut folk Perhaps a visit on cold wet day then Adventure isn't paved! |

To be honest, the place is so big that you generally don't run into them very often.
Every Walker, Mountain Biker, Runner and Motorbiker we met yesterday were all quite friendly. I tend to stop and let them past where I can. To balance everything up, if the shoe was on the other foot, when you see some of the 4x4 drivers that don't give a damn, I can sometimes see the Anti's point of view. All you have to do is look at the off-piste damage on Houndkirk Lane, which incidentally is completely pointless and really doesn't give you any better experience, to see where some of the Anti's are coming from. I'm also a GLASS member, but sometimes, I think that some of the lanes deserve TROs on them just to keep the balance of keeping everyone happy, but it has turned into a War between the Anti's and the Anti-Anti's so often little medium ground. The result is lanes are TRO'd for no reason whatsoever. Recently, a favourite of mine (and would of been on yesterday's route) called Black Harry's Lane has been TRO'd as there was "No evidence that there is a right of way historically", this lane is in the middle of nowhere and with no real significant reason to close it. The Anti's see this as a "Victory" which does make me think that they are doing this because it's now a war. Also, just to clarify, I have never stumbled across any Anti's whether I've been in the Defender or on a Mountain Bike (yes, their are also targeted too). Some excellent pics there guys!
Would love some info on the lanes you did, I've just moved over the hills from Yorkshire so don't really know my way around. Tom @tditomprice 100” Defender Hybrid 2010 Alaska White 90 HT |

Sadly x-isle, you're all too right. No matter which group you feel a part of, there is always a polar-opposite group aimed at opposition, destruction, argument, war etc etc. No patience, no latitude, no forgiveness. Defender owners - Walkers Walkers - Defenders owners SUVs - Greens Mountain Bikers - Walkers Bikers - Everyone who isn't a biker Cyclists - Drivers Mums with Prams - Adults without prams Armed Forces - Pacifists ISIS - Rest of the world However, what never makes it easy are the a***holes within your own group(s) creating problems. Much like the tw*t biker I have just seen (first I have seen this season, millions to follow) who felt that pointless and noisy acceleration was the order of the day whilst we were all having lunch. Don't get me wrong, I love my bike and its hand-made, baffle-free SS exhausts, but I do not rev/ride it stupidly around people in towns etc, only on the (very) open road. As Craig said, the off piste damage at Houndkirk shows exactly why the 4x4 community is disliked by many of the other users of these ROWs. I really don't blame them.
Was good to get out with some other like minded folk, I have been very cautious about meeting with others to go out greenlaning/offroading- you never quite know the mentality of those you are going to meet! Leanne (my wife) enjoyed herself too! I hope that it an be a more regular occurrence to go out and about with other forum members! I know the majority of the South Leicestershire lanes, and a handful in Notts and Lincolnshire but would be keen to go out around Yorkshire/Derbyshire/Lancashire/more Lincolnshire if folk are keen! Has anyone spoken to the local land-owners and discussed a regulated 'rotation' of lanes? Much akin to crop rotation, so lanes are open for fixed periods and then closed for preservation, and when closed other lanes open in lieu of them? Or does this happen already?
Or perhaps a (free or small registration fee) Green Lane licence might help? Issued by the local council/forestry commission, for genuine and responsible enthusiasts. To 'qualify' you would have to do two things. First, attend a day's instruction at one of the forestry centres, (with obligatory tea and biscuits) to learn about their local area, the flora/fauna, land erosion/preservation and the country code and by-laws, and further you must volunteer one day a year helping to repair the region's green lanes. I am sure any genuine 4x4 enthusiasts would welcome a day per year learning about their local lanes and another day helping preserve them, to qualify for the licence, especially if they knew other 4x4 users would have similar training and quals to help protect and keep their green lanes open. If the approach included both parts (land rotation and licence) it would be much harder for the Ramblers to get lanes permanently shut as the group would be seen to be 'responsible' and actually assisting in the upkeep of the lanes for all users. Just a thought.... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey Last edited by Grenadier on 9th Mar 2015 2:38pm. Edited 1 time in total |

In certain areas rotation does happen, however, not sure I've seen it in the Peaks.
With the current state, this wouldn't be a "Victory" so there's no happy ground. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

I just may have to get out my routes for the Peaks and consult with trailwise and sort a weekend out (if I can find a free one).
Sometimes being a legal and conscientious greenlaner puts you between a rock and a hard place. You could have all the permits, volunteer days, repair days you want, unfortunately this will not stop the ones who prefer not to use pay and play sites and continue to use byways as their own personal playground. What need to happen is more robust monitoring and inspection of the lanes by "law enforcement" officers, and not the hobby bobby folk who have little to no powers in this area. Not knocking other people's personal taste on vehicle modifications or accessories as I have done similar things myself, but from my own experience, I feel that a vehicle's/group's appearance does have an affect on the 'anti's'. When I've been out in my old 90 or in friend's vehicles with a big bumper on the front with winch, straight through exhaust, spotlights everywhere, roll cages, stickers etc etc, in a large group or of a group of vehicles that look similar to as described; I found a lot more walkers, cyclists or horse riders didn't really want to share the space with you or acknowledge you.
However, when I've been in more 'normal' looking vehicles, or my bog standard Series 3 that sort of 'blends in' with the surroundings, without any loud exhausts or anything with an 'intimidating' look about it, I found a lot of people had a totally different attitude. Some walkers have even held gates open for me and smiled back when I have thanked them, let me past them when in somewhere narrow or just generally been a lot 'cheerier' if you get what I mean! Grenadier, I think your idea on having a sort of 'greenlane license' is a good one, something I've thought about myself. Genuine laning enthusiasts would be able to obtain them as they'd have the will and knowledge to go and obtain it, but maybe those who spoil it for us would not. Enforcing it would be the main issue though I'd think, especially as we're having to make do with less policing on the actual roads. Pete 2010 Discovery 4 GS TDV6 1972 Series III 88" 2.25P |
