It could be the ignition circuit wire on the starter motor, when and if you have the problem again try pulling the small wire with the spade end off the starter and put it back on again. If there is some corrosion on the contact then that action will re-establish the connection. Another thing may be the contacts inside the solonoid on the starter which can be replaced for less than a tenner. The only difficult part of the job is the different sized nut (15mm) holding and hiding at the back of the starter motor.

As above, if it clicks when not starting it's probably solenoid which is an easy job.

Thanks JWL and MK1, will try and have a close look at the starter wiring, it definitely doesn't click when the key turns, it's just dead, apart from the dash lights. Come back Series 3, all's forgiven.

Managed to get under the motor today and could see straight away that the spade clip and terminals were covered in oil from a slight leak on the bell housing.
A good clean, and brush, and the problems sorted, thanks for help JWL and MK1 |
