So the 110 had a quick trip into the garage today to have a noisy wheel bearing sorted and also a small leak on the rear of the front diff investigated.
Bearing sorted fine and diff leak sorted too, but the cause was interesting. Some long grass had wrapped itself around the front Prop and has wound its way into the back of the diff, chewing the oil seal. So I thought- is there the possibility of fitting a gaiter or something over the UJs? I can't in my head imagine how a gaiter would work across a spinning prop shaft and stationary diff housing/transfer box at each end. But maybe someone has come up with a clever idea? Or maybe I was just unlucky and it's not worth the effort. Anyone any thoughts? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

IIRC in Series One days there was an optional guard for this purpose.

i guess what I'm thinking of is something to cover this whole area: (don't laugh at my quick doodle haha!)
Im not sure if it could work though as the propshaft spins and the diff casing doesn't. Click image to enlarge Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

What about just a small plate under the seal reducing the chance of gripping. It would also cut the grass short if it grips because of the spinning action of the propshaft, so reducing the amount of grass that can grip.
Not waterproof but it reduces the chances. On a side effect though, it may become a plateau for dirt the heap up... Don't think it's worth the effort as you mostly get the effect after off roading and then it needs a thourough clean anyway and remove the grass. |

QT diff guards would help.
If you put anything on the prop it'll cause un-balance no doubt and flail off. If you put anything on the diff side I think there is even more likely hood of stuff getting trapped in there. Really it'd need a tapered metal flange really. |

Only use dogging car parks that have short grass

You could be right there Andy, but it only takes one person to come up with a solution the a problem they have for everyone else to think they need it too! Russell
