I have had a swan neck mount for an iPad in my Defender for a couple of weeks now, and just wanted let you know about it.
Sold relatively cheap, so I really wasnīt expecting too much from it. 24.95 on the German eeb. Manufactured in China, and packaged in a shiny box with "Enjoy the pleasure of life, Please choose lazy bracket" printed on the side of it. Laughing, as I read it, and expecting the worst.! I was anticipating to have to do some modifications to make it fit the Landy and function probably. Not a bit of it. Unlike most of the flexible swan necks found on mobile phone or navi window mounts, this one really does the job. It doesnīt move unless you adjust it and is really heavy grade. The foot is made of 6mm steel, and slides easily under the 8mm front seat rail bolt on the passenger side. With a little bit bending we had the spiral neck shaped to clear the passengerīs leg and offer a perfect view of the iPad from both driver and passenger seats. Both in fast road use and loff road, it holds itīs position, and only occasionally vibrates very lightly The movement comes from the steel foot, not the spiral. Just needs a little bit of thought put into that, but doesnīt detract from an otherwise excellent product. What do you think? I have just ordered two more for my other vehicles. Great looking bit of kit, and very reasonably priced if it does the job as well as you suggest...
But, and I have to ask, why would you want to do that when you have a huge Garmin screen in your face already?... Rog... The GREEN One... MY2016 Urban Truck Build Thread - http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40548....al[/color] |

Good call, sir! Fair comment.
The Garmin is great as an everyday on the road navi. I love the way it works - quick touch screen and voice command, and at eye level where you really need an on road, in traffic navi. For off road navigating, keeping the passenger entertained on long journeys, and such, it is quite useful to have an iPad within reach. However, at the end of the day, I have to admit, rather like multiple light sources, oversized tyres and a snorkel, it is just a nice toy to have on board...... 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

I've just bought my boss an Arkon mobile holder, and was impressed enough with it when it arrived that I've bought myself one too. Ģ12 and it's solid, seems well built and holds the phone well at all angles. |

Hi Wild Card 90,
I've seen a similar mount to yours on UK E.B..y, can you tell me if the tablet grips are adjustable for thickness? I use my iPad in a Griffin Survivor case which probably doubles the iPad's thickness. Thanks Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

The grips are just too tight to securely hold an iPad air in a Griffin Survivor. Slightest bump and its out.

Do you think there is anyway it could be modified to fit? Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

Problem is the top jaws, they are too tight. You can remove the rubber pads but it's still not enough.
I plan to modify these by cutting and adding another piece-screwed on?. Worth a try for the price. Steve |

Hi Steve,
Yes, looking at the photos I thought cut off the vertical section of the jaws then use a bracket such as this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/15mm-Angle-Corne...2596729ee7 bolted to the horizontal section with wing nuts, it's got a slot so should allow for some adjustment. For less than Ģ20 all in it's probably worth a punt? Chris 2010 Defender 110 Station Wagon, Santorini Black. |

Definitely worth a punt and that bracket with countersinking should do the job,

I have only just picked up on Chrisīs question about the the space under the jaws of my tablet mount.
As it is, there is 11 mm between the inner surfaces of the jaw. However there is a neoprene rubber insert (glued in) which is about 3 mm deep. If you remove the rubber you will be able to fit a tablet or covered tablet up to 14 mm deep. 20 minutes, with a Dremel, you could probably get 17 mm of depth. My ipad2 air ist 8 mm deep. The Griffin Survivor looks like a good piece of kit. Obviously protects the ipad well. Could you measure your ipad in the cover? I havenīt been able to find a description where the depth is measured. No wonder there's so many accidents these days, too many things going on in the cab, things to fiddle with surely distract people from keeping their eyes on the road. Why do you need an iPad when driving? What's up with a simple sat nav to stick to the screen when needed?
No offence but it's too much of a temptation to email, surf, Facebook etc while driving these days. |
