Headlight relay loom - connect to alternator
So I just installed my Landreiziger headlight relay loom today and have seen on here and elsewhere that it is impossible to connect direct to the alternator on a Puma TDCi so has to be extended and fitted to the battery.
Well I just connected mine to the alternator and didn't find it overly difficult to do so.

I removed the air intake hose and then disconnected the hose from the bottom of the turbo as well.
This when tucked out of the way gave plenty of access to get a hand in and remove the nut, fit the cable and refit the nut.

In the first pic is it me or does the hose below the cable look rubbed or misshaped ?
Not sure what it does ? May be its under pressure to make clearance while doing this ! It's good to be back from the dark side

My Landreiziger loom was installed by my dealer, and they also connected the permanent live to the starter motor or the alternator of my Puma without a problem (thanks to their lift I guess). Additionally, in order to have a perfect negative (mass) lead, they extended this black cable a bit and then connected this onto the airco compressor which is not only easy to reach from the top, but which has a nut screwed in which has no real use, so seemed to be waiting for this mass cable. According to my dealer this is the best mass you can find for this Landreiziger loom Thumbs Up

That bolt that has "no real use " is a mounting bolt for the compressor , it goes right though the pump to the mounting plate at the back

Still ok , but thought you might want to know Rolling with laughter

I would make sure that bare copper has some Solder on it (it will corrode and add resistance) Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark

Yes I have.

No major issues I don't think... I can't really remember much which means it can't have been too much of a job! Did find that the fuse's plastic had melted (but was still working) after a while though.

On the subject of soldering to reduce corrosion in a crimp terminal, I wouldn't bother to be honest.

Vibration and flexing can cause even good solder joints to crack if not properly supported and then you have a small fissure for water ingress with much less chance of drying out, also soldering multi strand wire produces what is effectively a solid wire with the stress point now at the crimp, flex or the lack of it in solid cores is why multi strand cable is generally specified in machinery with vibration potential.

Engine bay ones see quite a bit of heat so generally shouldn't present any moisture problems.
the worst will be areas where we tend to get lots of mud/crud build up like underside of the rear tub but even then unless you hermetically seal the termination, solder in the crimp wont protect the copper conductors behind the crimp where you've stripped off the insulation and your cable will corrode just not at the crimp but rather to the rear of it.

A properly formed crimp termination shouldn't really allow water to wick along the conductors into the crimp body, but given the quality of most auto crimps and tools then maybe that's a possibility.

Mil spec crimp terminals aren't soldered nor are aircraft wiring crimp terminations. 3 Landrovers

Yes, a properly crimped terminal forms a gas tight joint. But you are also right that most auto crimps and crimping tools are pretty poor quality.

You're entirely correct, but then again the solution shown by Eric is, sorry to say, a poor one from reliability point of view.
This type of crimp terminal should be protected from the elements, like virtually all crimp terminals should be.
Now it is exposed making it just a matter of time before it will be corroded.

Luckily, Eric only drives his SVX on sunny days, so he should be fine for many years to come Laughing but I would not take this as a good example Embarassed

Actually, with some skill and practice one could solder-seal the tip of this crimped connector without the rest of the wire wicking up the solder.
But this is not really practical either and difficult to control during soldering.

The least thing to do is install a small protective cap over this bolt.
But I'm wondering, how hot does an aircon compressor get when it is working hard ? Peter,
