Condenser fan? I had a similar problem with my last Defender, the fan was also mechanically noisy and replacing it helped.

Also check the earth connections behind the coolant reservoir bottle (these are the earth points for the a/c clutch and condenser fan, and blower motor amongst others - including the radio)
