So the road i live on at uni (London) is the kind of road where you have a permit to park in a zone ( a few roads in area) and so you have no exact space, but rather are entitled to park anywhere along the road within the white box bit. (may sound obvious to some but i hadn't really come across this in Cheshire lol!)
Anyway, parking is free for anyone evenings and sundays (residents only 8-7 mon -sat) and so if you don't get a space before it becomes free then you often end up parking a few roads away from your house having been displaced by people going out for dinner etc. No problems normally. One evening i came back from the gym to find that it was especially busy around our house (footy match?) one of our neighbours had left two small bins in the road blocking a roughly 3 car length of parking, in an effort to reserve his space. I wouldn't normally, but i was starting to run out of options, so i got out and moved one of the bins, parked as tightly up to the end of the parking space as possible (easy in a slab fronted defender!) and i had left at least a defender 110 and a half length space behind me, so i had left a very generous space for them. i even put both bins back in that space to ensure that they didn't think was making a grumpy message by moving them, or encouraging others to take their space. Anyway, i came back the next day to move my car back to the space in front of my house and give them their (second!) space back (you know what us defender owners are like, i like to be able to see it from my window!). AND THE BLOODY HAD KEYED IT! Its not terrible, its confined to only one door (full length of the rear pass side) and it doesn't look terribly deep but its clear as anything and obvious what it is (not something done driving, and it definitely wasn't there before.) You can even see the 'dust' that has come out of the groove still there. Im not exactly sure which house it was to be honest, but I've been keeping an eye out for the bins again to confirm which one. Obviously theres no legal grounds to blocking 2 spaces worth of parking with bins, and i was kind enough to leave him a massive space to park in. I even moved it away the next day (its not like i just leave my car in front of their house every day! It was there maybe 12hrs. What do i do??? id be scared to confront the guy (or gal!) as thats not the type of person i am and I'm only 20, but I keep imagining that i could somehow secretly record a confession possibly aha! Maybe watched too many crime dramas. And i don't want to encourage any further repercussions, especially as my car is unattended most of the day when its down with me, and also because i live in a rented house so any damage to it would presumably be liable to me if they were that way inclined! Obviously its not something the police would be interested in lol. They'd turn up and say "what, they possibly scratched your car?" Its not about the car, its the principle! As John Travolta said on Pulp Fiction, "You don't with another man's automobile!!" I just assume that its a particularly sad, lonely person who has nothing better to do with their life!!! I feel for you dude, a cowardly act by someone with nothing better to do with there lives.
Personally, annoying though it may be, I would suck it up and chalk it up to lifes experiences. Unless you have CCTV proof that someone did it you don't have a legal leg to stand on and you don't want to risk angering them who may come back and do the other panels and pinch bits off it. Doesn't help I know but in the long run, its only a scratch. Pm incoming Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

yep that was my conclusion too Shaggy Dog. As I said, its not the worst thing in the world, they've clearly dragged a key along the door. Its gone through the primer at least.
It could've been worse! I've seen examples on the internet where people have inscribed rather colourful words on bonnets etc! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Steve, its a shame isn't it.
And its also a bit of a shame that a shiny black defender also looks more expensive than it is! if it was a grey 2010 toyota hilux or bmw 120d or something, then although they are nice cars too they probably wouldn't attract the same reaction. I find that most people really respect defenders, get lots of thumbs up and waves from guys and their kids too! even got a wave from a guy in a brand new jaguar F-type which i appreciated! I gave him a nice wave back and he gave a big rev which makes anyone go funny at the knees lol! (I decided not to give a rev back haha!) Oh well, we live and learn eh? Im not gonna get old and bitter like (presumably he) is! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Probably a good reason to set up a basic cctv system, at least the truck is still there...

Could have been much worse. I saw a BMW X5 with the words 'Park better next time' scratched deeply into every panel on the nearside - one word per panel. It looked like it had been done some time and the driver had still parked like a total prat, so some people never learn

Not necessarily... I'm not exactly young anymore but I don't think I'd want to leave a tidy defender parked on the street in London on a regular basis (simply because London + nice car does not equal winning combination). I know a lot of people in London, including a few that could afford pretty much any car they want, and am struggling to think of any who leave anything good parked on the street. Indeed, with all the car haters a 4x4 is always going to be at risk of vandalism no matter how considerately you park/drive. There's sadly a reason why garages are so expensive in London... |

Just have to suck it up I'm afraid but personally, everytime I would see the bins from now on they would misteriously be removed if you get my drift. Maybe even quite far away. Just wait a few times so they don't relate it to you.

Agree with Zone, time to make their bins disappear when they leave them out!!! Just make sure you leave it long enough that they don't link it to you.
