That's exactly right. It's to fleece the owner..
The only way around it is to buy or sell a vehicle on the last day of the month! Its 2015 and yet most DVLA correspondence still needs to be done by post. Registration transfers etc could all be done immediately via internet, with Tax records, keeper details etc updated immediately. I really wish they'd get with the times and maybe stop fleecing the motorist.. It's ever so slightly annoying, considering I pay £50 year for this service and the privilege of driving my Defender... |

The difference was you could sell with the tax on.
Often an incentive or a sweetner to a buyer? Especially when buying an older car Electronic is good...but should be transferable! I'm intrigued as to what will happen with my tax.
Taxed car online on Monday night (effective 1st Jan 2015). SORNed online it last night and was told it'd be effective 1st Jan 2015! My assumption was that I'd end up getting hit with one month's tax, but now I'm not sure... (before anyone asks the obvious question, it was a car I only needed to use for a day that I know won't be used in Feb) |

If you have used the car for a day in Jan it should be taxed from 1st Jan and SORNed from 1st Feb.
If you SORN from 1st Jan you'd be committing an offence. |

You've misinterpreted - I declared SORN yesterday (31st Jan). There is nowhere on the site to enter the date you want it to be effective from... I'd assume they'd have it from the date of declaration but it is their system that has automatically decided it should apply from 1st Jan!

The saving is a mere (in Government terms) 10 million. That's not even the shrapnel in your pocket, relative to Government budgets!
Just think of all the guys out there who need to do daily/weekly checks on their Company/Pool vehicles, you can't see whether the motor is taxed! Now if your shonky employer hasn't taxed the motor you're stuffed and get fined by Plod, it might be that some even more shonky employers tell their staff that the motor is taxed when it isn't..... The saving isn't worth the fines that are going to come out of this! The only reason they didn't do this with MOTs is that garages pay all the paper and printing costs...... |

It may be a design fault with their site, but if i understand what you are saying you will have ended up declaring a vehicle SORNed when it was in use and I am pretty certain that this means you have techincally committed an offence, however outrageously unfair that may be! Couldn't you SORN it a day later w.e.f 1st Feb to be on the safe side? |

I bought a defender repo at an auction with tax on it. Checked the website and it would not let me tax without the v5 slip which the auctioneer was posting to me. This took two weeks over xmas and then taxed it and they are fining me for not taxing or sorning from the date of purchase from the auction company. I thought the new laws were not to try and punish law abiding citizens. It just makes me more resentful of the amount we are taxed in this fair isle. 2009 110 Double Cab Bobby Basic

Bigbaker,, Sorry
But DVLA are correct,, hard !! but correct, that's how it is now
Vehicle tax does now not stay with the vehicle, any value left would have been refunded to the previous owner, when they returned the V5C/3 (yellow bit) to DVLA AS per DVLA
Presume you bought in December, drove it, and now have taxed from the 1st of Jan ? As per the letter of the new law,, you should not have driven it, unless you had trade plates ! No. I DECLARED SORN on 31st Jan and their system AFTER I HAD PRESSED SUBMIT said that it was effective 1st Jan. If I had declared on 1st Feb I would have needlessly paid for an extra month of tax... besides which I didn't know if was going to give me a crazy date until AFTER I'd pressed submit (remember, there is nowhere to say what date you want it effective from). |

I imagine that you have an interesting and credible defence in that case. Let us hope that nothing comes of it.
It will be interesting to see if DVLA refunds the month it has decided was "unused" despite your best intentions. |
