The reaction off your gauge is normal. It will never go slowly up. it sits at normal temperature and jumps to full in the red when hot. (At least mine does that too when trying to get out deep mud after a while) Roel

Let's hope it's nothing serious like the head or gasket .
My thought could be an air lock as you've just changed the thermostat ? Good luck. |

O well today it happened all again except this time it blew the expansion bottle lid off and dumped water out the bottle and some around the thermostat area maybe the radiator not to sure yet.. still hoping its water pump..

Make sure you get all the air out the system. A td5 is not the easiest engine for that. Roel

Sounds like head gasket or warped head.
My old 90 did this... only when i "booted it" and got the engine hot. |

Sounds like head gasket or head I had the same problem just over a year ago, fitted a new Spanish head

sounds like the water pump has disintegrated.
Try that first, before going down the route of the head. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At �125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island. |

I had similar issues with a V8 I owned years ago water pump had no play in it but when I pulled it off the impeller had come off the shaft ! Being hard up at the time I welded it back on instead of buying a new pump.
Hope it turns out to be a cheap fix for you  2005 Td5 90 XS

Water pump was not the issue, took off the old one and it's in better condition then the new one, I have now taken it down to the mechanics and tested for everything with no apparent issues, the mechanic seems to think it could be a faulty expansion bottle cap so a new one is on order.

As your car is at your mechanics see if he can do a sniffer test to check for combustion gasses in the cooling system. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I carried out sniffer test on my old td5 and showed no sign of contamination, symptoms as above.
Ended up pulling the head off, and the plastic locating dowels had sheared off causing the head to move, same problem on early freelanders, also on early td5s mine was 52plate If you do end up doing the head gasket, get the metal dowels 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

I give up, I've now had my Landy at 2 different shops, with me telling them to check the head and to give me a price to do the head gasket, and both of them laughing me out the door with there diagnoses of the problem. Might have to attempt this myself.

Mine was like this for months, just temp gauge going into the red and sometimes blowing out coolant. Temp gauge went back to normal if I eased off a bit. It finally got worse, so tha I had to top up coolant every 50 miles or so.
I finally changed the head gasket. The old one had delaminated along the exhaust manifold side. Only explanation I can think of was that the head bolts had lost some elasticity, and had stretched. They were certainly VERY easy to undo, in contrast to the sweat that went into getting the last 45 degrees on the new ones! |
