I'd recommend fitting ......... none of them!
If it isn't fitted it cannot rust, look scruffy or get damaged. |

Sidesteps do rust or deteriorate whatever make they are. I had a set of OEM ones swapped out at the 3 year point because of rust. Look at a set of decent galvanised rock and tree sliders perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

if i was going to get some side steps (i have them already, but i mean replace mine or whatever)
then i'd get either some simple stainless tubular ones on the basis that all they'll need is the odd polish, or some OEM ones and fill them with dinitrol/waxoyl or equivalent, and maybe seal up the end caps and drain holes? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Hello defender_uk
Well I would fit a good quality set of 'full length' side steps. Easier to get in (obviously) than no steps... Easier to clean the roof of your Defender... and They will stop some or most of those car park knocks, from carelessly opened doors... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

OEM for sure, but fix the known internal rust problem before fitting. I reckon they look pretty good, but then I am a bit of a sucker for OEM stuff.

Think about who is going to use them regularly. If small people/kids then OEM steps give a medium size step up to the seats. If larger people then go for the rock sliders as these are more dual purpose & spec'd correctly will last longer & be cheaper to purchase than OEM.

Get the version which Land Rover put on the SVX in 2008. Not a sign of rust on mine. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

+1 for rock/treesliders. If your going to have them they might as well be functional!
Also I think that a lot of runners tend to look like a bit of an afterthought or like they have been nicked off a Shogun/Pajero! Had a set of step/running boards on my old disco, not only did they look naff, they were a really bad muck trap, rotten and they were the first thing to get damaged off road! Chris |

are there any rock/tree sliders that are better or worse as steps than any others?
Whilst I can quite happily get in to my Defender without, it turns out that my mum, dad and girlfriend all struggle and ask me why I'm collecting them in a vehicle they can't get in to |
