Hi guys,
Noticed my front tyres are looking a bit thin (and worryingly front drivers side isn't wearing evenly so investigation needed) so am thinking of replacing them. I'm quite happy with 265/75/16 as a size as now I spend 75% of my time commuting on what Kent County Council laughably call "roads" but I do still get onto mud regularly. That said I have been thinking about getting some wolf wheels but this would mean replacing my rear wheel studs, and buying new wheels, and having a thinner tyer. Currently I am running General Grabber AT2 all round and have in all honesty been very impressed with them as they are very quiet, corner well and only really lock up in the wet if I stamp on the brakes as I don't have ABS. There is no real reason I want to change away from my At2's other than I'm just a bit bored of them. To my eye to look at they look a bit flat compared to my eye. I love my GG AT2s
They'll probably look a bit more 'chunky' when you get new ones too I guess? I've heard a few people running the Wranglers talk about how loud they are on road, and how poor they are in the wet. They were the only reasons I went for the AT2s over the wranglers. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Michelin XZL are seriously loud, I drove a Defender with them on and knew I wouldn't have been able to live with them myself.
Have you considered the standard fit Continentals? People seem to rate them. |

I've got Duratrac's on my 90 and GG At's on the wife's Shogun (not AT2's, the AT), I've not done much driving on the Grabbers yet, it sounds like I've got a bearing gone on the Shogun sometimes, at 50-60mph there's a definite hum, they are probably 60% worn though (it might actually be a bearing yet, it's in for a service on Monday)
I love the Duratrac's, they're good in all conditions and don't hum at all, look chunky, great in snow and mud, I tried Goodyear M/T's before that and they were dreadfully loud and were rubbish in the wet. So far the Duratrac's seem to be wearing very well too, I rotate them every 3/4k miles. I got them from Camskill, because I bought 5 I also got a £50 fuel voucher from Goodyear, that was a while ago though. |

Captain, I haven't looked at the BFG AT because to my mind they are very expensive and always seem to be at the centre of much debate so I left them off my list because they seem to attract argument rather than input. Plus, I just don't think I could afford a new set. Cupboard, thanks for that, have also found out the XZL's are incredibly heavy tyres which if tied to a wolf rim worries me a bit about having that much weight on the bonnet. Thanks David I think thats made my mind up

Thinking about it I have recommended my GGAT2's to so many people now based on my own experience I'd be a bit hypocritical to change so will do some shopping in the next few days. Possibly silly question, as its my fronts that are warn out, do I put new tyers on the rear then move the rears forward? I have 750/16 XZLs on my 110 currently, I really don't think they are all that loud- not much more so than any other Mud terrain- they are VERY sensitive to tyre pressure however and it took a bit of experimenting to get the right set up. They can be a bit exciting on wet roads, they have been very impressive in the snow as well. They seem to cope well in the muck, but we did struggle on some really wet rocky sections in the lake district- I think the compound is quite hard so we were scrabbling about on a few sections where the other vehicles with BFGs and Cooper STTs drove through with less fuss. I will be looking to upgrade to something a little larger and more aggressive as and when they wear out/finances allow.
In terms of the Grabber AT2s, I had them on my old disco, and I have to say I really didn't rate them, I thought they gripped poorly on wet roads and were poor in the mud- they were at their best on wet grass, and they were fairly quiet.- I changed to a set of Insa Turbo saharas which I found significantly more predictable on wet roads but were VERY noisy! My Father in law has has a set of Grabber ATs on his toylander which have been very good- he doesn't do any heavy offroading but regularly drives across fields at shoots which they manage with fine. I wou;d say they are probably a bit noisier than BFG all terrains though. The best All terrain I have driven on were Cooper ST's, we had them on a discovery at work and they were SUPERB. Really quiet and predictable in all road conditions very impressive in the muck too- our site was mostly 'orrible peat and they coped very well indeed.- I don't think they do them any more but if they are anything to go by I would expect the cooper ST Maxx to be very good too. I have been looking at them for a while and they do seem to get good reviews but similarly there wet braking ratings seem to jump around a bit which bothers me because thats when you need them most. To my eye they look to be chunky enough to look purposeful but same time they look sensible enough to be good on road too. Sorry shaggydog! I do like them though, I've tried a few tyres over the years and the Duratrac's are the best I've found so far, I'm thinking of putting some on the Shogun too, they look great, transform the look of a Defender, they're in between a Mud and All terrain. I got mine from Andy at AJS tyres (forum sponsor) - great price and service. They remind me of the old BFG trac edge. My main problem with the GG AT2s was that that hard the softest sidewalls in history - I lost a couple on stones and rocks crossing water once and I only had one spare with me  Also they didn't perform well in mud or snow. GG ATs were better, but the Duratecs were so much better in every way. I should say that I haven't tried BFG MT KM2s yet, but their reputation is well known. 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey
