^^^ Is that really correct? I have them on my '94 Tdi SW.
I took the bench seats out of the back, and they certainly had nothing connecting them to those bolts. On mine they do line up with tabs on the crossmember/body rail. They secure two large lumps of steel between the front face of the rear crossmember and the underside of the wheel boxes, which in turn are mounts for seat belt rails that run behind the rear seats. Just for the avoidance of doubt, I wasn't saying "I don't think so!" - more "really, I didn't know that." Poorly expressed on my part.
100% for sure though, my car had nothing like that when I got it. There is a steel plate underneath the top of each wheel arch, with a bolt coming through to the passenger compartment. I've always assumed this was for a seat belt rail - but while the seats were in the car when I got it, there were no seat belts - and nothing linking those plates I've mentioned to the cross member. Is there a part no for this - just for interests sake. I don't have a part number but do have a picture:
![]() Click image to enlarge This is looking up and towards the rear of the offside rear wing of my old TD5 110 station wagon. The bottom of the picture is the front face of the rear crossmember and the tubular bracket on the left spans from it up to the underside of the wheel box. The seatbelt rail is then bolted to it through the wheel box from above. Hope that helps. Cool! Thanks very much. I recognise the picture perfectly. I was just in there putting 'gaskets between my crossmember tabs and the aluminium panel, and then refitting my Gwyn Lewis shields and stuff.
So I wonder now if my car - "utility' or " low line" station wagon ever had such a thing, or if it was removed at some stage before I got it. But I've learnt something about what it's all supposed to look like. Do people normally remove these Torx fasteners when doing a Crossmember tidy up?

That's what I'm in process of doing at moment but one snapped and I couldn't work out what they were for. I'm going to order replacements today as they are clearly a critical safety measure. Oh and they are a pig to remove |

Definitely soak them in penetrating fluid of some kind , two came out relatively easily and two snapped off . Turning a 10 minute job into two hours having to drill out and retap ! https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/

The exhaust rubber bracket thing is in the way on one side, any tricks to get that off?

They look like the ones .
The bolts above the crossmember are much shorter and equally irritating to remove https://www.instagram.com/hustynminepark/ |
