D130 Canopy question
Hi All,

I have the standard 'canvas' canopy, which is fitted to the 2012 DC Defenders (in South Africa anyway, not sure about other countries).

Anyway, it's starting to look a bit shabby; so I'm looking at some different options when 'replacement' time comes (if at all).

Canvas options:
- Anyone out there who's had any luck properly dust-proofing (relative term, I know. lol) their canvas canopy?
- I see alot of the Australian guys using canvas sections in their storage areas...how do they keep the bulldust out - or is it just a case of putting everything in proper containers?
- Security? Thought of maybe adding expanded mesh to the inner sides and top. Lightweight & pretty cost effective I guess.
- Any decent brands out there, or should I stick with original and spend some money on security & dust/waterproof inner-storage?

Steel/Alu:
- Thoughts / experiences?
- Obviously heavier, but stronger & load bearing, as well as 'everything' proof...
- E x p e n s i v e ... worth the capital outlay?
- Custom camper, or std canopy with 3 doors?

My 130 is my daily - and I dig how it looks without the canopy. So either way whatever I go with needs to be 'easily' removed / replaced. I have space for a 'canopy-lift' of sorts, so no worries there.
It's also used for trails, camping and general cartage. I guess this is the problem with such a versatile vehicle Confused

Ideally I would like 3, interchangeable options (here's me dreaming):

1. Tray back / flatbed type thing for daily travel when no extra space is needed (maybe a big, lockable toolbox. lol).

2. Something like a slant back canopy, nipped & tucked; in-line with rear x-member...for short, weekend jaunts on trails etc. Like an 'adventure wagon type thing...dare I say similar to the H1 style (big tyres, small overhangs etc. Beastmode).

3. An overlanding camper canopy...RTT thats folds upwards, built in kitchen, 360' awning etc etc.

Thoughts? Maybe you've had similar things going around in your head? Maybe you've 'been there & done that'?

Any feedback, ideas or opinions will be most valued.

Thanks in advance Wink

A steel one you don't take easily off. Sometimes you see versions where the whole back can be removed, that's an option. When painted and if you really really use your car the paint sometimes cracks, i saw some bad ones.

I think there are some nice ones being made in poland for like 3500 euro. Ah found it AFN it's called.

I'm after a back for my 130 as well and will probably end up making unless one comes up for sale at a good price. So pictures of home backs would be helpful.

Chris.

AFN are in Portugal, Daams 4x4 in Holland import the canopies built to your spec.

Daams went bankrupt somewhere in August last year.
They are now called FD 4x4.
It seems like they now sell their own canopies which look identical to AFN canopies.
Same goes for their roof racks which look like Hannibal. I can't find Daams / FD 4x4 in the contacts of Hannibal anymore.
FD 4x4 is listed on the Hannibal Europe website. It's all very confusing.
Not sure if they still do, but they had some sandladders, which looked like those from Maxtrax.

AFN canopies are about £3500 by the time they arrive at your door.... Not cheap! PLus, they rewuire painting and sometimes a bit of tinkering by a bodyshop to get a perfect fit. You're looking at close to £4500 by the time its on.

I have bought 2 both were under 3,000 euros with all the doors.

Yes they need a bit of tinkering to get a perfect fit, this is not necessarily an AFN issue the Land Rover 130 tubs are not built square/true.

I've just had a quote of £3475 delivered to UK, with two barn doors and 2 side lockers. No windows.

Where can you get one for £2600? Daams?

I can get something similar here - for much less money, but it pushes the height of the vehicle to a point where I can no longer enter underground (or my home) parking garages.

Canvas is eeking ahead - but the dust still concerns me.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Ciao

Mike
