From LR service sheet
GLOSSARY: MAIN SERVICE = The main service is applicable to all vehicles. It is carried out at 12 month or 12,000 mile intervals, whichever occurs first. Main Service "A" is applicable at 12 months/12,000 miles, 36 months/36,000 miles, 60 months/60,000 miles 84 months/84,000 miles and so on. Main Service "B" is applicable at 24 months/24,000 miles, 48 months/48,000 miles, 72 months/72,000 miles, 96 months/96,000 miles and so on. Some items do not need to be carried out at every main service and these items are identified by an indicator in the tick box e.g. 60k (This indicates that this item is only applicable every 60,000 miles) The gearbox is "filled for life" (means change the oil at 82,000 miles) NOTE: The service required should be at the time or distance stated, which ever occurs first. Thanks grockel
I know the normal A and B services are 12 months or 12000miles etc - like i said i posted the service sheet on here years ago but it wasnt really my question It was the odd items that have a SPECIFIC mileage so not the standard service intervals that dgardel mentioned (which is self explanitory!) Just as an aside dgardel, the gear box according to the UK service sheet is 120,000 miles not the 82, 000 stated have a look in my gallery for my original posting Mike |

The service intervals are a joke
I changed all my oils (except the G/box) at 1000miles.Axle oils were very dirty and the T/box was 1litre short of full! Engine oil and filter no problem. I fitted the axles with magnetic drain plugs. Since then I have done this every 6000miles,fuel and air filter every 12000miles.Propshafts are greased every 1-2000miles. I have not touched the G/box as I want to see how long it lasts. My grandfather was a motor engineer in the early 1900's.He always said to me that the cheapest things you can buy for a motor vehicle is oil and grease. I took up the issue of the dirty axle oils with 2 local Stealers. To which I was told this is perfectly normal, which is why I do all my own servicing and repairs. I have a theory on the axle oils being dirty.I think that the quality of the machine finish is not as it used to be and they are relying on it lapping in through use. This would be fine if oils were changed at short intervals. The more I see of future motor manufacturing the more I want to regress. I think there is a balance.
Materials have improved as have the oils and the chemicals used...there have been many advances and this does allow a longer service - i do believe that. Whether some of the intervals are proven or appropriate...who knows...certainly there are terrian factors. Motorway vs African Bush have their different demands. That said - i knew a taxi driver that would buy cheap oil and change it and the filter every few thousand miles. My view is get the best quality oil and change it at the manufacture's interval or less on balance of other factors. Mike |

[quote="dgardel"]what do yo mean with "dirty"?

My 200 tdi Disco never had the grease colouring the axle oil in 200k miles.(and yes it had grease and not oil). As my 90 is a working vehicle on and off road I will stick to my 6000mile services.Quality oil is realy cheap compared with metal parts. I dont think anyone is disagreeing I think there is an expression of balance...actually you want longer service intervals (and this can be positive for the components as well) for a cost, environmental and serviceability perspective. I think there has to be an acknoledgement that the componets have changed and arent 100% the same as the 200 or 300tdi (or even TD5). Im not sure what you mean by the cv grease is stealer speaker. On the 200 and early 300's there was a filler for the cv's when they were oil and then through the transition to grease for life...moving now from the late 300's you can no longer drain them Mike |
