The 2.4's I had from new all made the cleaning cycle noise after shutdown. Current 2.2 does make a one or two sounds after shutdown but nowhere as loud as the 2.4. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

The 2.2 does have a clean cycle, its controlled and actuated depending on many things within the calibration it can also be deactivated within the calibration.
Some of the criteria are that the engine has been running for 180 seconds before its switched off. It will clean for 5 seconds It must have a minimium battery voltage of 10.504Volts It must be above -10 ambient temprature It will only do a maximium of 3 clean cycles withing the 5 seconds allowed It must close when told within 0.5 seconds and open in the same It uses a control signal of 20.001% for a close and 79.999% for open Etc etc, 0.5 seconds time 3x open and 3x close = 3 seconds, so by the time you have got out and the engine has actually stopped rattelling the clean cycle is probabally all over already. If you cant hear it its either the car/engine is not within the many more criteria it must meet or its just very quite. Pete |

Thanks for all the replies, especially the very comprehensive data from Pete.
I will listen carefully the next few times I'm out in the Landie. |

The 2.2 does do it but not every time. I do hear it from time to time.

I have a 2011 2.4 Puma and it used to have the chucka chucka chucka sound when you turned off the engine but now you don't hear it anymore but it sounds more like a loud exhale. No warning lights on the dash.
Does this mean all is still OK or should I start scoping out banks to rob for parts and labor? |

If there's no noise, then it's stuck. Possibly beyond cleaning now so will need to be replaced (or dare I say removed/disabled). Eventually, I suspect the engine light will come on.
It sounds like it's stuck closed, but more importantly, if it does move and sticks open the engine will stall at idle and will be very difficult to restart. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Crap. Thanks for the heads up x-isle.
Sometimes the noise is there but lately not so much. I guess I should start getting ready for that. |

If it's doing it occasionally, then maybe it's still cleanable, however, what I've experienced is that when it starts to get stuck, it gets very loud and you can even hear it moving when you go on/off throttle whilst driving.
Maybe yours isn't sticking, maybe it's faulty or has a bad or intermittent connection? They are pretty easy to swap out, but expect to loose some skin on your hands as it's very tight in there. Don't do what I did, I dropped a bolt down the back of the alternator and it took me about 30 mins to get it back out with a magnet. Hopefully it's still cleanable.
Hmm... I don't think I've ever heard it other than the usual chucka chucka chucka noise and now the loud exhale noise. Don't really hear it when moving or on/off throttle. I'll take him to an acquaintance who has a shop and let him take a look. |

Does anyone want to explain what this cleaning cycle is?
I have had my 110 2009 since new and never been aware of this. Thanks |

When you switch the engine off, within around 1 second the EGR self cleans and it makes chugga chugga chugga sound. The cleaning cycle lasts less than 2 seconds.
You can clearly hear it in this video; Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

That sounds exactly like mine. Presume that is the way a 2.4 should sound. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Yes and the 2.2 is the same, although the EGR valve is slightly different as it is water cooled. Craig Rogers
