Yes I saw that but didn't think it very helpful.
You know with the Td5 to check for oil in the loom etc but didn't know if there was anything specific to the Puma Dave |

I'd advise driving plenty of them. I found they varied massively, and also very disappointing to a Td5 as they are so different. Check for noisy clutches. EGR noise on turning off, all dash controls work, make sure difflock can be engaged as a lot so new have never been used. There should be no exhaust smoke at all. I would advise a look at the fuel filter as a guide to how well it's been serviced, maintained, because they are a pain to do. Test abs and make sure light is on at start and turns off whilst driving.

This will be the first one i've driven unfortunately with a Puma engine.
What's the deal with the EGR then, should it make a noise or not? Can they be blanked off in the same way that a Td5 one can? All other comments noted and appreciated thanks. Where is the fuel filter on the TDci? Dave |

The EGR should make a nice chuka chuka chuka sound as you turn engine off. Can be removed blanked, and mapped to alter this.
Fuel filter is in same place as Td5 one. Pop cover off and have a look. If you get the opertunity you can try to take it above 84mph, if it does more than this it's been derestricted which probably means remapped. Abs light should be on till you get to 6mph will then go out and stay out. Andy |

They make a noise on their cleaning cycle after you turn the engine off. You don't need to blank them, go to a tuner and they can turn them off for you. A lot easier than messing with the engine and having to get the light turned off.
Clutches seems to be the one. They rattle like made until you depress them. However if they have been changed the newer clutch plate seems stronger. Apart from that just the usual things to look out for, abuse and poor maintenance. |

2007 and 2008 Pumas have a problem with the piston cooling jets (search for PCJ and you'll get a load of information) which meant that some of them develop a terminal knock and die. You can tell if death is imminent by looking at the MOT emissions results apparently.
All 2.4s seem to have clutch problems, and some seem to have had multiple clutches put in under warranty. If there's a rattle when the gearbox is in neutral and the clutch is up something's not right. That said, some people have driven for tens of thousands of miles with it like that. I swear mine didn't do it when I test drove it, but definitely does now Make sure there's a "chucka chucka" noise when you switch the engine off. That's the EGR valve cleaning itself. Pre 2010 vehicles had a weaker front diff. I'm not sure exactly when this changed but I think it was the 2010MY. After that, they moved to the "four pin" diff that has two pins. Yes, that does seem like a silly name to me too. Pumas seem to have much worse transmission clonking than TD5s. That might just be that I've only driven bad Pumas and good TD5s, but judging by other reports I don't think so. 2011 and some 2012 110s and 130s have a recall out because the front swivels fail which causes the wheel to fall off and "vehicle stability will be compromised and the degree of directional control minimised, this significantly increases the risk of an accident." Which is a very calm way of putting it. They don't all have TC/ABS. |

All that is brilliant thank you. I wasn't aware of the cooling jet issue but I guess that problem will be evident when the engine is started.?
Clutch issues noted too! It's a couple of hour drive from here so hope it's worth the journey Will let you know how I get on Dave |

Thanks for all the advice. The Land Rover seems great and everything works.
Only problem I could see was the transfer box oil seal was knackered and the aircon rad was a bit ropey. I was really surprised how well it drove compared with the Td5. Completely comfortable at 60-65 and able to have a conversation at that speed too. Seats seem more comfortable too. All in all a nice package. Just need to go and see the bank manager now........ Thanks again for all the help. Dave |

Be aware of the cost of a new air conditioning rad (condenser). They ain't cheap, I know
I now always have fine mesh inside my standard grill so I don't have to buy another one. And where's the pics Andy |
