Even if you try I'd guarantee you that the one item you didn't bring you'd need!

Had a sidelight bulb blow the other day ( after posting in a recent thread that I'd never changed one) and didn't even have a screwdriver to change it with, had a bulb though ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

Halfords do a pretty comprehensive set (I think 200 piece - whichever is the biggest kit they do) that is regularly on offer for 100 - 150 and has a lifetime guarantee. I wouldn't go anywhere in a Land Rover without mine to be honest!... If you ever need to take a propshaft off the special extension tool makes the job much much easier too. AA membership isn't bad value for money either!

I only carry a small kit i.e. for tightening something or a quick nip up style repairs.

Anything else is a bit pointless because if it is broken enough that you have to strip a part down, you wont have the gaskets or seals or replacement parts with you, so why risk it and just get recovered home?

That said I usually have:
1 pair of screwdrivers
1 small socket set
Set of bulbs
Clear, Amber, Red light lenses.
Jacks.
Packet of Polos ( to suck while waiting for AA man)

If however I was overlanding I would take much more with me.

At home however, mostly Halfords professional there box sets are often on sale and incredibly good value for what you get. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

As dozer said, get yourself the big halfords kit. The halfords "pound through" screwdrivers are a good buy as well.
The propshaft socket is great, have a look on ebay for one of those.
Also a 52mm (I think) impact socket for the hub nuts, much easier than using a box spanner and a lot more professional than using a hammer and chisel! Shocked
A long breaker bar to use for wheel nuts is better than having to jump up and down on the tyre spanner supplied with the truck too.

Edit: the way I read it the OP was just asking what tools are good to have. Obviously you don't need to carry all of my suggestions with you everywhere! I only carry the breaker bar fitted with a 27mm socket. Tom

I carry a 1/2" breaker bar with a 27mm socket for changing wheels. The standard wheel brace is too short for loosening the bolts so I end up having to stamp on it. Not ideal.
a couple of screwdrivers, some cable ties a leatherman and a roll of bodge tape. I carry a small hatchet for clearing foliage if I need to. Oh, and a recovery kit- a handful of shackles, and a selection of strops for recovery or winching along with some thick leather gloves for winching. Not moved on to a dyneema winch rope yet!
