In the early stages of undertaking an extension and a part of that is to remove the conservatory.....anyone know if there is a market for 2nd hand conservatories?

I knew of someone that bought an ex-display one from a garden centre based dealer. Gumtree may be your best bet or an advertisement in your local paper. If someone is considering a conservatory in your area it'll save them a fortune and line your pockets too with a couple of unexpected grand perhaps?
My other half just informed me a doctor at the surgery she works at just sold his for £1000. It would have cost him nearly as much in skips/disposal costs. Caterham, time for off topic question
 , the chimney at the rear was that to put a log burner in your conservatory ?
My son keeps saying we should put one in ours, but I was told it would be expensive to achieve ? Cheers |

I've got a log burner in mine. The flue isn't cheap at £160 metre and you need a minimum of 4.5 metres from hearth to top of flue according to HETA regulations. If you've a polycarbonate roof it's a non-starter. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Seems so. Had mine 7 years and the rules have obviously changed. Flues as mentioned can cost the same amount as the boiler itself especially the double skin variety. If you have a contact or are able to go to France the flues and boilers are much cheaper.

Rather than trying online sales you could try what I did with huge success when trying to sell a 28year old Robinsons Lean-To greenhouse - I put an A4 ad with photos in some of the local shops for two weeks - it sold within 48 hours and one condition of sale was the buyer dismantled it. Due to interest I even got more than the asking price too and the buyer came and took it down and only broke one pane of glass! I would list it on ebay. I did with mine and it sold within a day to a fella from Devon. He was a dealer and thats all he does. i got a grand for it.

Flues are expensive, but it's worth having a decent one. Double skinned ones keep the gasses hotter so the fire draws better. |

I'll assume that I can get something for it as it's in good condition (a couple of the hinges rattle and vibrate......but lets not go there  ), I'll need to try and get it advertised as soon as possible as I presume the best time for a sale will be early spring and not autumn?
sorry - re the chimney. I stand to be corrected here.....I don't think there is anything to say the chimney can't go through the polycarb roof but clearly it would need to be the twin wall variety. as mentioned this isn't cheap but I believe you'll be able to source it for less that £160 / mtr. with regards to heights I believe you need to be at least 2.5 mtrs away from the house (in this case) otherwise the chimney would need to extend beyond the apex of the house. at >2.5 mtrs from the house the flue needs to extends 0.5 mtrs above the roof of the conservatory. like I say don't take this as gospel. the other thing of course is you may well need a defra approved log burner. the log burner in the conservatory is great in some respects but I've been getting lazy and since the conservatory gets so damn cold I find I can't be bothered anymore to venture in there to get the fire going and hence the extension I'm looking to do where the log burner will be a feature in addition to central heating and not instead of. |

Caterham, I did the same a few years ago but I did some research.
It cost me a couple of hundred to the builder to take the conservatory down carefully - with the express point that it could be rebuilt. I took photo's of it insitu and put it on ebay sold as already disassembled ready to take away. Loads of ads on there for buyer dismantles, mine was the only one taken down. Massive interest and sold it for £500 |
