Electrical advice for a novice
Depending on how each step goes, I'll probably be asking some pretty basic questions in an attempt to add some elec-trickery to the Defender. I've never worked on vehicle electrics before so I appologise for the very rudimentary nature of the questioning.

Q1: I want to tap into the permanent live behind the rear speaker panel in my 110 (the one for the additional aux socket). I can see a fairly thick purple and black pair of wires, which i presume to be them.

Do I have to disconnect the battery before wiring them up (if it is a permanent live then I presume I could daily short it).
If I disconnect the battery, what should I look out for?
I presume I just disconnect the live terminal - any tricks to that?
I also presume I'll have to enter the radio code once I reconnect.

As I say: basic questions but I figure this is the right place to be ignorant Very Happy One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

I haven't done this mod yet but will once I get some free time. I personally wouldn't disconnect the battery for this job. I would use a multimeter to check for the live and earth then strip back a little of the insulation on the live to allow me to solder on the connection to the accessory plug, (connect a insulated spade crimp onto a length of cable and connect that to the plug connection first, that way the live end will not short to earth if you accidentally touch the chassis. Strip about an inch of insulation from the other end and twist the exposed wire around the bare wire on the live feed. Then add a bit of solder to secure the join. Tape up with insulating tape to insulate the join) I would do the same for the earth unless there was a handy bolt nearby into the chassis where I would then use a round crimp and attach the earth there. Would need to check the ampage to see what thickness of cable to use but as I have a small supply of 20amp would probably use that Thumbs Up
Now cue someone who has done this for the right way of doing it........... Whistle

You can buy sockets that are just plug and play for that connector in the rear, no wiring needed, just drill a hole for the socket and plug it in, easy!

If you do want to cut and solder in a different type of socket then i suggest you take the positive off the battery just to be safe, its always less work than replacing fuses and wiring if you do get it wrong.

Pete.

The wires behind the speaker panel ... purple is +ve, black -ve, they are on female spade connectors so should be easy enought to wire up a 12v socket

Just make sure you ensure there is enough space behind the panel for the depth of the socket.

Another thought, if you are planning on fitting a reversing sensor kit, make sure the 12v socket does not get in the way of the sensor unit.

the earth should be removed from the battery first, rather than the positive.
