By my reckoning that's about £1,600 in our money. Depends on overall condition but even if you were to break it you'd get your money back if you had the time and inclination. The turbo alone if new would fetch a good price and recoup a large slice of your outlay.
Not really a question that can be easily answered. Any pictures? Make sure you crawl all over it and if possible take someone with you that knows a bit more about Land Rovers than your mate that bought it. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

If the dealer has had the head off for work has he bled all the air out of the cooling system ? It is also possible to get the pipe work to the thermostat the wrong way round ( this is in the coolant pipework between the engine and the radiator and has three pipes going to it )
Might be worth buying a factory workshop manual from Amazon or similar you would recoup the cost of one many times over if you buy a Defender. The Td5 is a robust and long lived engine when looked after. Let us know how you get on  2005 Td5 90 XS

My old project90 (see the project thread) had two heads on it before I got the engine running properly.
It would start straight away, run sweet as a nut, pull like a train, but blow all the coolant out of the header tank. Was a crack where the injector nozzle pokes through (and I also had oil cooler issues, but that was pumping oil into the coolant... made a nice mess!) |

In rural areas, that age, it is quite possible the engine has been 'stretched' ie overworked towing heavy loads a lot, does it burn oil? Let it idle a while then jab the throttle. Smoke? I looked at one like that. The dealer's repairs would not be the end of the story. 
Nevertheless, could be a good bet, especially if there is no corrosion on chassis or bulkhead etc. I know a few blokes in Melbourne (where I'm from) that build Landies for a living (eg British 4WD), the engine can be fixed. If you are not nervous of that and have a few hundred bucks after purchase .. Take someone who knows the engine, if there is such a bloke up there, to have a look. Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |
