I would'nt trust a dealer to service a wheelbarrow...Unless it was under waranty.
They suck the oil out via the dipstick hole,thus not getting all the old oil out.Plus either charge for things that dont need doing. Then on top of that charge you rediculas rates for the work. An oil & filter change service is not rocket science. Do the work yourself.Then,at least you know you have the job done properly.  |

No, no they don't suck out the oil. Urban myths floating around are common. (By the way that's only on D4/RRS that it's an option on, but it doesn't get sucked out even on them!!).

Haha suck it out the dip stick, wish we did that would make a lot less mess! Bit totally agree with your opinion on not trusting other people with my vehicle, trouble with land rover servicing is the price is unbelievable ! Take it toba recommended indie or do it your self

I also really do want service stamps in the book. Whilst the Defender will be staying for a few years, it won't be staying indefinitely and it will need moving on at some point.

Had a few dealing with Fews, all good, so out of the 2, IF i really had to !!! that's where i would be going,

Yes TJ no longer a main dealer which is quite sad, I bought a Freelander from them brand new back in 2005 and they were excellent at the time.

Take it to a good indie. Theres one by me or theres one in Dursley which should be better for you. I can personally recommend both. They will both stamp your book and this should suffice when you come to move it on. Both will be a lot cheaper the a main dealer. I can give you some numbers tomorrow if your interested. Jay |

Unfortunately Gum, experience from working at 2 Land Rover dealers means I know they do suck the oil out on many occasions (mostly on d3/4 and the tdv8 engines) The dealer local to me doesn't remove wheels, check axle levels etc on services. I get a lot of 3/4 year old defenders/discoveries in for service work which have to have the wheels beaten off with a hammer and a block of wood as they have corroded to the hubs! Not saying all are bad as I know of some very good dealers in the uk, most people with a 4 year old defender would choose to take it to a reputable indie. Pays your money and takes your choice I suppose  |

Interestingly the last time I had a dealer perform a service I asked if I could wait while it was carried out. No problem they said. I watched as the vehicle was put on the ramp and decided that I would wander off and get a coffee, the receptionist said they'd call when car was ready if I wasn't back. Around ninety minutes later they phoned to say all done and ready for collection. To the point; the invoice was for £400 which included all parts which were itemised, the total for these was around £80 which left £320 worth of labour. I enquired what their labour charge was and was told £80 an hour including Vat. I explained that they'd only had the vehicle for two hours so therefore they'd grossly overcharged the labour. I could see the receptionist now starting to squirm and she tried to explain that serving was all fixed price and most services take around two hours because apart from oil and filter changes everything else was just a visual inspection. Anyway, after a bit of persuasion they conceded my point and charged accordingly. So the upshot is after that I would book the car in for a free visual inspection and oil and filter changes and according to the technician (their description not mine) he just carried out what was on the service schedule as it covered all the points he checked anyway. According to an acquaintance who is the dealer principle of my local LR dealer the workshop is only there to facilitate the car sales and carry out warrenty work, which ironically fills most of the time.
So the upshot is all work thet I can't undertake myself is farmed out to my local specialist who so far has proved to be reliable and trustworthy as well as extremely helpful, being general engineers as well they're willing to turn their hand to anything I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |

The easy way out of the labour charge would be for the garage to have said they had 2 "engineers" working on the vehicle
 Or thats what i used to tell customers if they questioned labour/time taken ! |

I know of one JLR dealership in the North West who regularly farm out vehicles for servicing and repair to a local independent who charge £35.00 an hour, the Dealership then charge the customer £90.00 an hour making the dealership a profit for doing nothing. I am also informed that this practise goes on a lot at many other dealerships.

If garages only charged the actual time taken and not book time they not make any money
if a job has a book time of 3 hours , but after doing the job 100 times you get it down to 1 hour the customer still gets charged 3 hours thats how it works if its a unusual job ( electrical problem ) , then that will get charged out as time taken |
