LED interior lights continually glow - why ??
Hi
Just bought some LED interior lights (festoon) - tried two different makes, cheapies and Osram LEDC5W 12v 1w

The bulbs illuminate OK when door opened or manually switched on but if left in "switch on when door opened" position they glow ever so faintly continually, ie current still to be getting to them ??

If i turn the lights off manually by the switch on the interior light they do switch off fully

I have no issue with the standard 10w filament festoon bulbs

Bloody annoying, any ideas would be appreciated

Tank

Remove the LED light and put a DMM on the terminals with the switch in the off position, any voltage? Replace the LED light and test the terminals again, any voltage? Remove the LED light and replace the original festoon bulb and recheck the terminals with a DMM, any voltage?
Does your defender have a factory alarm fitted as standard? The alarm module (10AS) controls the interior lights switch on when opened so a check with a diagnostic tool will tell you if one of the alarm door switches is faulty:

If it involves hitting it with hammer - I can do that Smile

No probs, DMM Digital Multi Meter or an analogue one will do the same job. Basically you are checking for any voltage on the interior light terminals when the switch is in the Off position. Thumbs Up

Has alarm, and yes slight voltage when in door closed position
When light switch manually turned off no current (obviously)

Is this something LR can sort?

Thanks for replies Smile

It will be covered by warranty but put the original festoon bulb in for the claim. Did you check for voltage with the festoon bulb fitted?

I have LED'S fitted in my 110,before fitting I noticed that the interior light had a fade from on to off when the door was opened and closed, this still happens. is this what you are referring to? Don't make old people mad.

Presuming we are not talking about the normal fading out of the interior lights

But, when they are off, either with the time out fade, or switching on the ign, a couple of the led still "glow"
Mine do the same,, with both cheap led units or dearer ones California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Unable to physically check with multi meter (dont have one) but switch on "illuminate when door opens" they illuminate, close door and they turn off, but tont turn off fully they remain on with a very faint glow
Turn the interior light to "off" position manually and they turn off completely

So not normal light fade, they appear to have continual current to them Crying or Very sad Confused

I've just gone to check the one I bought from Outbound 4x4 and I can't see any quiescent glow.
That's inside in the dark, so I really should be able to.

I didn't try it with the alarm on though.

mine does the same when it wants to..... some times its fine sometimes not.
i even get it where if i have the windscreen wipers on at night every wipe the interior light will slightly dimly glow. very marginal, not to fussed to be honest. i just put it down to the fact the LED will work with the smallest of current unlike the standard bulbs...

Much much lower current draw on the LED's unless they have a resistor.
That can sometimes be why, the fade will be less gradual unless a resistor is fitted or more LED's that up the draw.
What wattage is the standard bulb I tend to forget?

@12v
Standard then about 833mA draw.
Most LED versions around 100 - 220mA.

Mines drawing about 660mA on the front circuit but I do have various LED strips wired into that.
The rear is drawing about 180mA as its just the light fixture LED only on that light.

Both work perfectly.

Mine are non can-bus as far as I am aware, came from EBay and have been good but can be very hit and miss getting good ones.
