As earlier mentioned, I am looking to improve the sound quality of my HU [Which I worked out myself means Head Unit ] simply by fitting better performing speakers ... no Subs/Amps etc.
Right, as a speaker novice, I'm seeing speakers described as either 'Component', 'Coaxial', 'Two way', Or Three way' ... Then theres Woofers, Tweeters, 2 ohm, 4 ohm ....... I'm completely clueless, to me a speaker is a speaker So how about a guide as to what exactly these descriptions mean? Which is best, what do each 'type' do, What type is better fitted in the back, best under dash etc ..... I trawled through Steve's 'Definitive ICE' thread, but it wasn't much help. Share the knowledge blokes Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Don't get me wrong Steve, It's a great thread, It just doesn't give 'Know-Nothing's ' like me the basic help needed to improve on standard fitments ......
Sort of thing i want to know is .. What 4" speaker choice is best to replace the under dash speakers? Which 5.25" [modding the hole] speakers are best in the back? Tweeters, Leave alone, disconnect or replace? Do i need 2 way, 3 way, coaxial?? Does any wiring need altering, additional wires etc, Or is it simply unplug old and plug in new? Wattage?? .. Ok, what do i need? Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

The quickest way to make your sound system sound better would be to add an active sub. These have an inbuilt amp so don't take up much room and the wiring is pretty simple. Next is probably sound deadening the panels so you can hear the stereo over the vibrations.
Woofers = bigger more bass speakers Tweeters= smaller high frequency speakers Component speakers= seperate mid/bass speakers and tweeters (like in the front of a puma) Coaxial speakers= Mid/bass and tweeter on the same speaker body Two way= coaxial speaker Three way= coaxial speaker with 3 speakers |

I suppose it's down to personal choice which you get. I personally done like coaxial speakers as I feel it distorts the Niger frequencys and I like my music very "toppy" so prefer tweeters up high and good quality. 4" aren't really any good for bass at all and upgrading the size in the front of a defender is not easy so the best way to get a more rounded sound reasonably cheaply is to add an active sub. Good quality sound in a defender is not likely to happen unless you spend a fortune on soundproofing so there's no point in going nuts. As for speakers get the best you can afford, focal seem to be popular on here and are good quality and with head units you need to choose what features you want and buy good quality brands.

I hear you .... Sound proofing is pretty good, and tbh the sound system 'as is' isn't too bad for my liking, I'd just like to fit better quality speakers to improve on it a tad.
Will fitting 3 way 5.25's in the back make much difference? Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Some will say yes but me personally would not. If you want louder rear fill then go for it but amping the speakers will get you clearer sound.

Have a look at these:
http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/shop-online.aspx/10cm-speakers These are standard size, as mentioned you won't get great bass from this size but the will be better. The more expensive one will be more crisp high quality. The cheaper one will give some more bass due to the lower frequency response. I wouldn't touch your tweeters unless it's the last thing you do as there isn't great gains to be had there what ever you fit. You could add some 6x9 speakers additionally with an Amp, but you'd have to be confident enough to set up and wire it. And also crucially have the room available, which depends on what you use for your defender for. Soundproofing you will find might improve what you already have anyway as it will dissipate the engine and road noise thus giving you better quality sound. Soundproofing is on my to do list, but you will need plenty of dismantling of trim. |

fitted these on xmas eve, update as promised.
Straight swap in front, and easy 5 minute mod to make the rears fit. sound is greatly improved, quite bass'y with the rears. I wasn't overly impressed by the difference in the front, until i realised the dash top tweeters were 'smothering' the sound quite a bit, making it sound tinny. So .. i simply disconnected the tweeters. All round sound is much better, far more bass ... Good recommendation, Thanks Steve Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Assuming the std LR fit tweeters are proper component speakers, there should be a crossover fitted to separate the frequencies, from low/mid range and high range (tweeters),on Focal components the crossover is adjustable. Disconnecting your tweeters really should be a step back.Altho audio "sound" is very subjective. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
