Wiring a blue sea fuse box properly.
So I'm keeping this defender forever, I've decided, and as such I'm turning an electrical corner. I want to go back and sure up a few of the electrical items I've fitted, this time using a proper auxiliary fuse box etc. (I've been known to use scotch locks, lots of tape and twisting wire ends together in the past haha)

So I've got a blue sea fuse box which I want to fit properly in the battery box. Can someone tell me (or point me in the direction of) how i should be wiring it into the battery please?

ie:
-fuse/no fuse btw battery and fuse box? (if so what size?)
-thickness of wire?
-how to connect to the terminals best?

want this part to be "bulletproof" so I'm confident adding on whatever else in the future...

cheers in advance Cheers, David

fuse/no fuse btw battery and fuse box? (if so what size?) -- depends on what your running on it , and how short and protected the wire is to the fuse box , example if you fitting the fusebox along away away from the battery and had a long wire that could rub through then yes fuse the feed , if the fuse box is next to battery and good protected wire then possibly not

-thickness of wire? depends on what your running on it and might add later , and what might be on at the same time and how long etc

on the positive terminal there is a m8 threaded hole to put positive feed for fuse box on with a ring terminal , only use a short bolt as the threaded part isn't very thick

negs are you running back to battery box or picking earth from where the thing is you fit eg off body/chassis etc
if your going back to battery then I would cut the neg terminal off the fit a ring terminal to the earth wire (needs to be heavy duty and good crimp , poss not diy job ) and fit a neg terminal with a stud then bolt main earth to it and a earth wire for a bus bar terminal block for earths

Depends as Munch stated what you're intending to run off it and it's maximum current capacity. I connected mine (also Blue Sea which has I believe a 60 amp total rating) directly to the vehicle 100 amp mega fuse. I then subsequently placed a 60 amp fuse in line and ran that to the input of the fusebox on the basis that the smaller would naturally rupture first in the event of supply cable failure. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Rule of thumb for larger cables 7-8amps/mm2

Blue Sea fuse boxes are rated at maximum of 100 amps per bank of 6 fuses so that is the largest fuse between battery and fuse box.

If using a 12 gang fuse box spread the load as evenly as possible between the two banks of fuses. You do not want 6 x 30 amp fuses on one bank and 6 x 1 amp fuses on the other bank.

David if I can help with any bits 'n' bobs you may need just drop me a 'pm.' Thumbs Up

Couple of pictures....Suffering from mild OCD and having only one battery I placed the lot in an IP67 rated enclosure too with waterproof glands. I also ran an extra multicore cable from driver's side to passenger seatbox for any future additions as the cable would already be there.

I chopped up an old pair of cheep jump leads for the supply and ran it through a 50amp fuse, the type that audio buffs use. Obviously up the fuse rating if needed.

thanks so the help everyone so far! some good stuff to think about/read

K9F- may drop you a PM in the coming days or hours!

leeds- thanks for that info, v helpful. An opportunity for you to sell a 'wiring kit' for the blue sea fuse boxes perhaps? I'm sure theres a few out there who are capable of wiring the odd bit, but would be happy to buy a ready-made kit for fitting the box to the battery itself? just a thought... Cheers, David

quick question that I'm sorry i could find the answer to!

buying a few bits, what size/dia. 'hole' do i need in the connector (the polo shaped one) which attaches to the main positive on the blue sea fuse box? i.e. the incoming +ve feed from the battery? Cheers, David

I would recommend VWP too, especially for multiple bits and pieces.
The prices are very competitive and good quality, for smaller Canute cable I'd recommend thinwall too.

Mal's photo example is great, always screams to me that you can tell a sparky co,pelted it too.
MK junction box and all.
