as far as im aware it drives the wheel with the least amount of friction if you jack your vehicle up and put it into gear the drive will got to only that wheel put it in difflock and it will to one front wheel and one back wheel

Rubbish - but it explains why we get what we do with LR mechanics.
Search for AndrewS post on diffs or similar and the diagrams will confirm how it works Mike |

Sorry for your Dealer but...............
inside the tranfer box there is a "normal" diff. so when you drive (no curves) the torque is 50%-50% no way!!! Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |

Well,
I receive the same aswer sone time ago from the same dealer, but I didnt give me the time to explain him with apples why this cannot be possible with a central diff (locked or unlocked). There is no way if you are not turning that you can have different force in each axis without have different speed also. This is our main problem in Chile, a dealer that knows nothing about what they are servicing, and the worst thing is that is the only one Cheers Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

Ok, but still there is a chance that the TCase has torque biased diff, which I doubt, because AFAIK those diffs are Torsen type.
For me the only way to check it is by lifting the rig and see that crossed wheels (or both props) do one turn at the time. is it? Apparently he will show me a LR tech report or so written by a LR engineer Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later |

NORMAL DIFF.................
no limited slip clutches, no torsen gears or others toys.... only a very good 100% mechanic locking system (probably the best for off-roader transfer box.... The puma uses the same center differential as the Td5's, TBB500060 (just checked on microcat), which is a plain, open, non torque sensing differential.
Your mechanic is talking BS.... i'd not let him anywhere near my truck!!!! |

He did it again!
I`m not going to write what he said last night when I collected the rig, but next time (monday) I`m going with a chap who has been on the 4x4 bussines for 40 years. 1 dealer-1MK
Today I went to my mechanic and checked on the front double cardon (CV joint) as it was blamed to be the cause of my clunk. Before, we lifted the car and made it run with all wheels on the air. Guess what! Indeed front wheels spinned faster than rear ones. With difflock on, front and rear turned at same speed Anyway we took the front prop off and all joints were perfect. So drove to visit the dealer to show him the prop and joints...........he said today he coul not find anything wrong with the parts Dealer noticed excess slack on the transfer so they will change it (this has about 10kkm of wear). Finally he said most probable cause of failure is due to the higher mass of the front prop stressing the gears in the TC. sounds also like a pile of BS. Its an open differential so will send more power to the side with least resistance. The rear prop' is longer and heavier, therefore offers greater resistance than the shorter, lighter front prop'. This would account for the front wheels turning faster than the rears - they were getting fractionally more power. Edited to removed typos. Last edited by harveyg77 on 25th May 2010 11:31am.
