Wandering rover
Have a problem with my D90 2.4 tdci. 56k miles

Changed all the bushes, TRE's and steering ball joint and had new tyres.

Wondering if its the steering box as theres little play with wheels set dead ahead but gradually gets worse as you turn. Say, from about 10-15mm at straight ahead then turning the wheel about 6 inch to left or right theres about inch and half to two inches play. Does this sound within the tolerences?

The steering column feels tight so dont think its that.

Any ideas?

Always check the steering box at straight ahead position and adjust if nessecary,if that was the question,cause the tittle differs Question

It does wander when driving quite noticably.

I was asking whether it could be steering box according to the symptoms.

Looks like you have play, probably in the steering box but check everywhere.
What I find not common ist that you have less play in the straight ahead position as it most of the time the other way around.
It can be the steering box but also the steering joints having play. Roel

have you checked for free play in the wheel bearings?

The way the box is built means there will be lots of play at the extents of the travel. This is why the adjustment is done at the straight ahead position. There shouldn't be significant play there.

I'd also check swivel pin preloads too. If they're not loaded properly this will cause wandering and instability. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Have checked the wheel bearings and all seem sound. Swivel pins too.

I dont want to go messing with the box if i can help it as it looks a right pain to get at but suppose its worth a try.

I do have a wheel bearing crushing noise coming from drivers side rear wheel. Bearing is fine btw. Funnily it stops when you put the clutch in.

The steering box isnt too bad to adjust but check everything else first with an assistant rocking the steering .

The bolts holding the steering column universal joints can come loose.

Panhard rod bolts loose are always a favourite.

There is a second adjuster on the steering box but that is more for kickback rather than wandering.

I would think you will find something other than the steering box adjustment.
