To all LR stats, pie-charts, tables and numbers fans, I need a little help.
I have recently upgraded my main wheel to an AR Casting F-15 (AKA Blindo) shoed with Cooper ST Maxx's. However I am looking to get a set of Nokian Hakkepelitta LT2 Winter tyres to pop on the original LR steel wheel (reconditioned from factory white to Matte Black). The wheels dimensions are listed as: 5.5 J16 33 I have no real idea how that translates to metric, so what would be the advice for the size of Nokian tyre needed for this wheel? Please note that I am keen to retain the 'taller' wall (it's just a look thing) but happy with a thinner profile as I know they work better in snow. So what sizes would you recommend? According to the Nokian website, the following sizes are available for a 16" rim:
215/85 R 16 225/75 R 16 235/85 R 16 245/75 R 16 265/75 R 16 285/75 R 16 Most people reckon you're pushing it a bit putting 235/85s on a 5.5" rim, though it can be done. That's the size that is most commonly referred to as the metric equivalent of the 7.50s that are usually fitted on the standard steel rims. |

Most people say 235s are pushing it on the standard steels. 255s tops on the Wolfs. Whilst Nokian don't seem to list recommended rim sizes, Cooper and BF Goodrich say the largest you can put on the 5.5 is 215/85 (or lower profile 215s). |

Use the 235/85R16 It fits perfect on the 5.5
With the 245 you will loose nearly 2cm ride height WANTED: SII or SIII in max 1.5k |

I've just had LT2 235/85 x 16 fitted onto 7"wide rims and that was a struggle - according to tyre man.
They look OK but I can't imagine them fitting 5.5" rims without some serious swearing! If you must stick with 5.5" rims, I'd opt for maximum 215mm wide tyres. Best of luck

I have a set of 245/75 BFG Muds (the original pattern) fitted on genuine HD "Wolf" rims which I use on a trailer, and the tyre fitter didn't have any trouble fitting them.
I can't really see that putting 255/85s onto 7" rims was a struggle, unless the tyre fitter is someone who just doesn't like doing any work! When I had the 285/75s fitted to my Boosts the fitter didn't have any trouble (same fitter as for the 245s). Perhaps it's because it's a tyre place that does agricultural and truck tyres, not just cars! |

The tyrefitter probably finds it a struggle as he normally does normal car tyres.

Well we have just had a set of 255/85/16 BFG M/T. (Original pattern, thanks Peter
) onto a set of Wolf rims.
No issue there as they were fitted by Four Plus 4 in Leeds and they are used to fitting 4x4 tyres and no issues

235/85R16 come standard on Defs nowedays.
245/75R16 are Disco 1 & 2 wheels, I think...??? for calculation purposes only: 235/85R16 => 235 = tyre width in mm 85 = 85% of 235 = tyre height in mm R16 = 16x25.4 mm wheel diameter So complete height = 16x25.4 + 2x0.85x235 = 806 mm (current standard ?) 245/75R16 height = 774 mm (2 x 16 mm top and bottom less = 16 mm less rideheight !!!) 255/85R16 height = 840 mm (+17 mm ride height, but may be to wide for this rimm?) 265/75R16 height = 804 mm (-1 mm ride height, but may be to wide for this rimm?) |

235 section tyre is not recommended on a 5.5J wheel rim. Andy.
