Any implications on the vat element as ive claimed it back?

The VAT regulations can be complicated to put it mildly!

It is not permissible to claim back the VAT on a 90 SW but it is permissible to reclaim the VAT on a 90 HT.

Now if I remember correctly the VAT on a 90 SW is not reclaimable as despite it being considered a commercial it's official payload is below 1 tonne.

The big point is if you put windows in the back of a 90 HT are you officially converting it towards being a station wagon?

By fitting windows in the rear could it be taken that you are using the vehicle for private use? There are also rules about seats which can be fitted and removed from the vehicle.

Before spending money check carefully with your accountant or VAT expert about any VAT implications.

The alternative is to go ahead and hope you do not get an indepth VAT investigation.

Certainly looks a minefield. There's a rule that car-derived vans cannot have rear windows unless completely opaque (which Masai etc are not). But the Defender isn't a car-derived vehicle (see link below which I can't make live), so does the rule apply. Probably imho. I wouldn't go there unless prepared to pay the tax if HMRC caught up with you.
