Given that it is technically illegal to use hazard lights when visibility is more that 100m, shouldn't the petition be for the police to enforce the law or increase the fines? 2013 Aintree Green 110 Station Wagon SX

Quite agree, plus lots of them just get miss used. For example there is a petition running at the moment to get Gordon Brown to go F himself And those that do eventually get to the house are announce to about 3 MP's who actually turned up!!
Oh yes!! it is wired into the dash isn't it Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Quite agree. Last week on a dull rainy day I was driving in town, with my headlights on, as correct for the conditions, and a 90 with DRL's was coming the other way with his DRLs switched on. They were very dazzling in those dull conditions and were not doing anything that was actually useful. He had no other headlights / sides on, so therefore no rear tail lights. In dull conditions you put your lights on to be seen from front and back, so DRLs on their own are NOT sufficient anyway. IMV, LED DRLs are pretty pointless, apart from if you like 'the look' and they are just an extra bit of bling. No worries in brighter weather, but in dull weather they are not at all friendly to other drivers. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/ Yorkshire Off Road Club - http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net |

IMV, LED DRLs are pretty pointless, apart from if you like 'the look' and they are just an extra bit of bling. No worries in brighter weather, but in dull weather they are not at all friendly to other drivers.' In the Army we were required to put our main headlights on at all times when on public roads, whether on the brightest day or inkiest black night, to counter the camouflage nature of the vehicle and ensure we were visible to other road users. I have followed that philosophy ever since, whatever vehicle I am in. Much as the Swedish and Motorbike manufacturers do it as an automatic setting on their models, it is to be seen rather than see. Agreed, it is a little moot if your rear remains unlit, but I would argue that the DRLs on the approaching 90 did their job, as you clearly saw them. But I also agree that some DRLs (mostly non OE versions) are too bright. However, even if not using DRLs, I still think flicking the light switch down two notches every time your drive, is a worthwhile SOP.... I think there are probably a number of Series I, II and IIIs that have automatic lights and Windscreen wipers when it rains (once the water has leaked into the dash and got mixed up in the wiring.....) I've never really understood why DRLs are a separate "thing" and they didn't just get cars to have their sidelights on all the time. That way you don't have to change anything and you get light at the back too. |

Our other car is a Golf, and it has front fogs mounted in the bumper. When cornering at low speeds (less than 25mph) one fog light will come on to help with cornering, E.G, if turning left, the left hand fog light would switch on for the corner, then off once wheels are straight. Unfortunately this feature can't be turned off by the user. Think it has to be disabled by dealer in ECU.
Until I explained it, my wife was getting most upset by it, thought there was a fault with the car! |

^^^ That is another totally stupid and pointless feature, which no-one in their right mind would implement.
