Probably electrical, that's why it's so crucial the correct wire gauge and fusing is used.

Re fire extinguishers, in my experience a 1kg is not big enough. Yes they can work on small fires but you need to get there fast enough. It is mind boggling how fast a fire grows with good air flow. I'm also doubtful if a 1kg has the compacity to snuff a engine bay or dash board internals.
Make sure you extinguisher is EASY to get to. It may look ugly being available but absolutely useless tucked away if its hard to access. I upgraded to a 2.7kg after finding how laking 1kg turned out to be, and also placed it at the back of the car where fire is least likely to start. My Defender and travels |

Ironic number plate for a Land Rover, even more ironic for a burning Land Rover

^^ I am originally from a country where fire extinguishers are a legal requirement in all cars for decades already, and that is a good thing really. The requirement is for 1 kg capacity. It is common knowledge that a 1 kg extinguisher empties itself in a matter of 10 seconds or less, but the idea is that as all cars will have one like that, multiple other drivers would stop when seeing the beginning of a fire and come to help with their own extinguishers. 5, 6, 10 or more of those little things can make a difference to stop a starting fire.
Here in Switzerland, fire extinguishers are not required, and only few people will have one. I have in the back of the Defender a 2kg extinguisher, always easily accessible once the rear door is open. Now that I think of it, it is past its use by date, so I need to go buy a replacement. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

I my working life I have seen a complete reversal in the philosophy to fighting fires. On a major gas processing plant all the active fire fighting equipment was removed and training stopped. Obviously, there were still passive systems and extinguisers, etc for admin buildings. The theory was you only fought a fire if it was between you and the means of escape - otherwise you just let it burn until the professionals arrived. Plant & equipment can be replaced - individuals couldn't. I would not want any number of individuals fighting a car fire with 1kg bottles. Notice those fighting the fire wore breathing apparatus. I remember a talk by a member of the fire services where they stated that a burnt out vehicle contained all sorts of highly carcinogenous contaminants and other nasties and should be kept well away from even days after the event. I was surprised by how close that car drove past - what if there had been an explosion - 4x4 carrying a gas cylinder or air bottle? |

How come it takes a thief about 5 seconds to pinch the bonnet , yet these guys need £10 grand of specialist tools to get it open

I'm guessing in a word - practice.
...and if you have the toys, why not play with them. Surprised that the bonnet didn't show any obvious sign of damage after the jaws were used. |

I carry a small 1kg extinguisher and as far as I'm concerned it's just there to buy enough time to get all the occupants clear before things get critical. I hope I never have to use it as losing the Defender would be heartbreaking., but not nearly as much as not getting everyone out in time.

Im a retained fire fighter as my second job. we have to wear BA for all car fires now here due to the gasses given off. Think its probably for the best you dont get members of the public having a go over just a piece of metal at the end of the day. If there was a person in it a different matter altogether though
As said the bonnet was probably a bit hot to open by hand Defender puma dormobile camper |
