3.2TDCi 5 Cylinder Ford into a 200TDI Defender
Hi, I am just new to this forum and after any help I can get. I have purchased a 3.2TDCi engine, gearbox, ECU, Engine and Bulkhead/dash wiring looms and hoping to fit into my 200TDI Defender. I have read many articles where people have fitted into a Puma Defender, but non where people have fitted them into a non Puma engined vehicle. I was wondering if anybody has done this yet?

Hi Mike, your spot on. I have worked out most of the mechanical side, but electrical is going to be very tricky. I am trying to find out if I can sort things so that the engine can operate as a stand alone unit and would love to hear from anybody who has achieved this.

The 3.2 engines management is different to the puma Defenders as the throttle pedal is not hard wired to the engine ecu. It needs to communicate through canbus, It would be easier to use the entire Transit engine wiring harnesses, transponder, cluster, etc to get it to run, as the Defenders Puma wiring requires a lot of modifications and programming of the module to get it to run. I would advise you to keep clear of the stand alone ecu options unless you want the performance of a crop sprayer. Good luck as this is a massive undertaking. I would advise you to drive a 3.2 tdci Defender before starting this, as I would not fit one to my own car and I have driven a number of them.

I am planning on using the Transit wiring harness if possible, rather than buying a Puma one. I have the engine harness from the engine and all of the Bulkhead/Dash from the Transit, including the ignition key, fuse boxes etc. I currently have it all laid out on my garage floor and once I have identified what wires I need to keep etc, I will trim down the loom. The major issues that I see are getting the ECU to function without lots of components such as ESP, ABS, Air bags, the CAN wires that run around the chassis have been cut, and obviously lots of other components that the Transit has connected into the loom. I also do not know what I am going to do about Dash clocks and lights, will Puma dials and lights work and fit into a old dash?

I dont think it would be my choice of engine to fit as the electronic side would be to much for the gain you get , I would opt for a older style engine with standard pump etc not electric injectors etc

heaven forbid even a older big jap engine

Reason for the 3.2 - I have driven a number of Transits with the engine in and I find them the most ausom engine and best performing engine that I have ever driven in a van, they just pull and pull. The torque at 470NM is fantastic and they pull from such low revs. Initially I thought that they used the MT82 gearbox so would mount straight up to the Puma box. However, I was wrong and have now bought a secondhand MT82 Puma box and going to have the back end fitted onto the Transit MT85. With regard to the electrics, I did underestimate the complexity.

I personally think the 3.2 tdci engine feels lazy and seems reluctant to rev, the main problem is as the standard Puma gear ratios are so low you end up having to increase the gearing unless you want to pull away in 3rd gear. This compounds the problem even more, and if you increase it even more through the diff ratios it gets worse. Add to this the fact you are lucky to get 6000 miles out of a gearbox before it destroys itself. It is a shame as it looked like the perfect solution as an easy way to get more power but the conversion is far from easy with the necessary gearbox modifications, wiring and programming required. I personally don't think all that grief is worth it. The 3.2 has impressive torque from 1500 rpm but is far from a high performance engine,

Easy no great problem really I have sent you an email Thumbs Up

Just to add the gearbox is the same in a transit and defender just different end casings and tbh I think the gears are slightly stronger in the defender box

The Rangers like that feels geared way to low, in the Transit (or mine) 100mph = 3000rpm & it still feels like it needs a 7th gear Shocked mine has gone through one clutch/flywheel in 230k but still on original gearbox.
Biggest problem is trying to slow it down when fully freighted Laughing

Over here we have the Ranger/ Mazda, however the Duromax seems to be more popular conversion. Very Happy
