Dodgy Pioneer Satnav
I have a Pioneer AVIC-X3 unit with flip out screen, connection to an (ancient) ipod, and rear view camera connection. It's a few years old now but it serves its purpose - good sound, satnav up to date to 2012 (so sometimes wrong), reasonably reliable ipod connection and useful rear view mirror image.

I recently had the GPS sensor moved (doesn't matter why) and this involved cutting and extending its coaxial cable. It worked fine at first but (and this may or may not be related to cutting and extending the coaxial cable to the GPS sensor) it then began to give an error message asking that the correct DVD be inserted. Taking the disc out, cleaning it, and putting it back in a few times seemed to solve the problem at first but over a few days the disc kept being rejected more frequently. So the cheapest and first option seemed to be to buy a new disc in case that was where the fault lay. However, with the replacement disc once again it seemed okay for a few days but reverted to the same failure pattern as before.

I could live without the satnav functionality for a while but unfortunately if the satnav fails to start up the screen remains blank for the other functions. Now I'm thinking that the read head (or whatever it is) may be playing up.

Thanks in advance for any ideas please on what's wrong, how to correct it or what to do if I have to replace the kit altogether.

If I do replace it I'm inclined to go for separate components i.e. mech-less head unit with ipod connection, separate satnav arrangement (possibly using a yet to be purchase iphone) and a separate screen for the rear view camera. Comments and advice on this route would also be much appreciated.

Apologies for the length of this post.

Cheers

Rob

Try a laser cleaning disc. This sounds like typical failure of the laser though unfortunately. Some disc heads can be dismantled and the laser power turning up, this is usually only a problem when using copied discs, assuming your map disc is a proper one?

Thanks for the advice Steve. I didn't know there was such a thing as a laser cleaning disc. That sounds worth a try.

Er, no. The disc is a copied one. The originals had ancient maps and replacing with Pioneer original discs was just way too costly.

So it's my own fault (in part)!

If you still have an original disc, even if it is out of date give it a go to see if it works.

The discs are I believe 'lens cleaning' discs. You used to be able to get them from Tesco etc. Havent used one for a while but I believe they have little brushes on the back to 'dust' the laser head.
