Transfer box
Sorry but it's another question...!

Had a good play with the transfer box yesterday to make sure all is okay (had a quick go when we got it too). Haven't driven a Defender for a while (since the earlyish Td5s) so can't remember the situation on changing it - anyway it's not an easy job! Got there in the end with all modes (low/high diff lock then low and high "normal") but it was hard work and almost seemed a bit random (when it went in, it went in pretty easily!) . Not tried the manual's suggested "2nd gear method" yet but is there a knack to it? I'm tempted to get the dealer to have a look (we have a year's LR approved used warranty) but if it's normal, I won't bother.

Also been told to keep an eye on the transfer box oil - how do I do this?! Manual offers no advice. I'm aware that the diff/transfer box can be troublesome so just being cautious. Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

The transfer lever can be a little stiff to engage if it hasn't been used for a while or if the gears aren't quite lined up - I've always just put them in first whilst parked, with the brake and clutch pressed down, and slowly raised the clutch whilst pushing the transfer lever forward into low - as the cogs line up it should pop in nicely. Peter

Also best to make high to low and back a double process (similar to double de clutch)

i.e. from high to low - push lever forward with clutch in to neutral position on low box. Lift clutch and then depress clutch again and go into low range. To ensure low range is locked in, rock car forward slightly in first gear and push forward low range gear stick again. To go into difflock just slide lever to left at anytime, hi or low box.

Going back into high ratio is reverse. Very Happy

Best to go into low range when stationary, but I believe you can do it while moving very slowly, I always seem crash gears when I do this.

There should be plenty of threads on here or other sites about checking box levels, also in Haynes manual.

There are loads on here about how to do this and several suggestions above.

you dont need to double declutch if you are stationary doing the change, just keep the main box in a gear and work it using the clutch as described two posts up.

I suggest you do all changes stationary to start with until you get the hang of it. Low to high on the move can take some practising. I would always do high to low stationary anyway. Cheers

I find making the change whilst the vehicle is just rolling - ie 1-2mph - works well for me

High to low
When going from high to low I just put the main into neutral, take my foot off the clutch and then press the transfer lever forward. Smooth like butter.
For low to high I use the same procedure. Hans

My high-low stick keeps going from low to neutral whenever I stop pushing the gas-pedal. When there's no power on the transfer-box, the stick jumps to neutral. This makes it impossible for me to change gear when driving in low.
When driving in high, there's no problem.TDCIpuma 2008

Its not fully engaging in low. Either linkage needs adjusting or it needs to be pushed further fwd. Sounds like only partial gear engagement Cheers

Problem solved. There were parts missing inside the transfer-box.
From now on, my co-pilot does not have e to hold the knob all the time when off-road.

Im looking at a Td5 with the same problem
Kris,

'parts missing in the transfer-box', care to explain a bit further? Does this mean the box was actually incomplete?
I'm currently looking to buy a relatively young and Td5 which pops out of low gear too whenever I release the throttle. Low gear hasn't been used often, if ever in the last year.
