Why is the defender limited to 90kw
So is there a reason both the Td5 and TDCi are limited to 90kw?,both are well down on the disco and transit outputs so is there a reason for it. Pat

Think that is probably correct. The Pumas in any case are quite torque rich, and guess Land Rover have determined that an antique box like the Defender is not to be driven as a race car, so no real need for more HP. In todays environment where total safety, etc. is high on the attention of all global companies, Land Rover probably want to avoid back firing in the press of the consequences of high speed accidents.
By putting the accent on torque, limiting the HP as well as the top speed, they have a more easy defense in case of press attacks. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

140 bhp seems to pull much better than my defender

I drove a long wheelbase hi roof Transit the other week and found it quite a pleasant drive for its size. I have no idea if its got basically the same gearbox, but it was much lighter and smoother shifting, car like in its action. I would say the low to medium speed acceleration was much better than the Defender, however up a hill I'm familiar with on the M1 I would say the Defender definitely has more poke at 60. Seems strange but maybe the extra weight and maybe a more drag with a big Transit takes its toll at higher speeds.

The transit was a new 2.2 and my Defender is a 2.4.

I have to say I was very impressed with the Transit overall.

Yes from what I remember driving my pinto and modded Transit they were quite able too surprise other drivers. Just like Defenders really in that respect. Very Happy

A Transit is lighter in some cases I'd imagine which makes a difference.
My 90 is 145 - 150hp approx.

that doesn't seem right

mine hte 140 tranny, rear wheel drive swb, payload is 1,5 tonnes, it pulls well even when loaded right up

driven across Germany with cruise control set at 90 no probs

when empty its even good fun, being rear wheel drive

also I run it with hankook dynapro AT tyres

Through my work i have the use of brand new Transits and even the older ones we have (2 yrs max) impress me.
Not only do they really move but arvery smooth and for want of a better word "refined".
They're all 2.2 Pumas and generally loaded with all extras as they are or were prototypes for appraisal and test etc and only yesterday i borrowed one of the new LWB RWD with 10 miles on, it flew and the only thing i was a bit disappointed with was the mpg but that may be down to my driving as i was rushing about in it as i only had it for a few hoirs.
i've just ordered a new XS 90 and hopefully it'll be here before Xmas and although i realise it won't be as nippy due to gearing and aerodynamics i'm certainly confident about the engine

One of the reasons I bought my defender is I like the puma engine so much in my transit


and yet the td5 boys still bang on about it being rubbish - mostly cos they havent driven one !

its well proven, how many transits get loaded right up from day one, ragged about the country by employees who drive them like they nicked em

England 2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Aintree Green
I have to say that as much as I loved the old TD5, which had an ECU remap, the new 2.2 is very nice to drive. Done nearly 2k miles now and it pulls well and I don't feel I have lost anything over the old TD5 (other than the lovely/distinctive engine sound).

5 cylinder power stroke overlap makes for smother engine. Very Happy The 3.2 puma in a Fender would I think be very nice! Very Happy

I have put 2500km on my new Defender in the first few weeks and have to say I have been happily surprised with the engine.

I would love a bit nicer sound though. Dad's 300 tdi and the td5 on the farm sound better. But maybe that is what I am more used to . . . anyway I still wouldn't swap it!
