Hi,
I've been looking at getting some sounds into my old Landy - which has zero electronics - not even a valve radio! On the up-side, I've got a blank canvas. I've narrowed down my requirements to the following; DAB Radio Bluetooth iPhone 4 & 6 pairing for hands-free CD/DVD 6 speakers (2 x tweeters, 2 x front, 2 x rear) USB available to plug in Hard Drive or iPod for music. I kind of like the Double DIN arrangement and would like to go for something such as the Kenwood DDX-5025DAB Unit. I've also realised that a decent DAB aerial is around £45 - £65 but because of where I live, it's what I will need. Don't know if I could warrant adding an amp but if you think it's worth it.... I've enjoyed reading all the tips, mods and comments in this Forum - very informative - keep it coming. So, I'd like to ask all the learned fellows on here for a shopping list to give me a good sounding, quality system. Does that sound like a challenge? Also hoping to keep the whole cost to less than £900 (hope the wife doesn't read this!) Oh, the building of a custom dash will also be attempted, along with a Roof Console. Should keep me busy over the winter. Looking forward to your replies. cheers LRmud (Callum) |

Hello LRmud
All sounds good... But, I would consider (seriously) installing a sound block / acoustic layer to help maximise the quality of the kit you plan to install. If your considering dash work and a roof console, your well on the way to exposing the surfaces you need to treat. I did this on a 300tdi and got 2 results, you can hear the Stereo... and my wife at 70 MPH... I'm about to do the same on my 2.4tdci, which has better but still basic sound proofing. I used... and was amazed at how good the results were last time, a lot of work, but well worth it, if your about to spend <1K on a ICE system I would find a way to do at least some sound proofing. Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Thanks for your reply and comments.
Yes, I will most definitely be soundproofing the Landy over the coming months. I have read about Dynamat and it looks the business. I expect it'll make a huge difference. Not sure I'll be wanting to hear the wife though, she does go on a bit! Is there "ICE" to avoid? Should I choose stuff based on price? Well confused by all the choice. cheers LRMud |

Hi LRmud
Do a search for Dynamat on here and read up, it is as you say the business... Before joining D2N, I saw it being installed into the shell of an Airstream Trailer, being prepared for exhibition work demonstrating sound systems, together with a 'home' cinema set up. The team doing it said they wouldn't use anything else... so that was my intro' to it. The brave bit is removing your complete interior, but again there is now plenty of advice on here and the www generally, my roof lining basically fell off my 300tdi ( Land Rover build quality) so I got carried away with the fix and sound proofed the whole vehicle. I used the base product then, the range has moved on, not cheap, but is good to work with if you apply enough it works, soaking up vibrations and deadening out road and wind noise. Good Luck... Big Russ,
Not bad, not bad at all. The kids might complain at the lack of video though or did I miss something? It's a good price and maybe I really don't need the video. cheers LRmud |

I have one of these;http://www.sevic.com/site/_en_catalogue_sevic_fiche.php?id_catalogue=66
I bought it second hand for very little money and I must say it is a totally different world that I've entered. I've used previous radios as a hands free for the motor, this did take a bit of sorting as there's no bluetooth but link through an adapter on the av plugs. The DVD is played on a small screen but there is the ability to link further screens but the biggest downside I have found is that the sd card reloads every time and I haven't found a way of doing a random play so you end up listening to the same songs at the start unless you skip manually through the card. There's the facility to add a reversing camera plus telly if you're that way inclined. |

Hi LRmud This is what I have, it covers all your list including DVD (Video), and all in a single DIN slot, so out more or less with the old and in with this, a 7 inch motorised touch screen unit with a few buttons below, great all round system, and the Sat Nav graphics / simplicity of use is very good, (main reason for purchase). Sound quality out of the existing speakers in mine is also very good, (an amp + woofer combination upgrade is on my to do list). Only down side is when out I have a few blind (but operational) buttons on my dash (2010 / MY2011) Your 300dti is different than this so check and check again for screen position when deployed. In my previous 300tdi I moved the Stereo to be within the glove box (to take it out of view as it was parked on the streets in London). Kenwood KVT-526DVD 1 DIN Motorised 7 inch Monitor / DVD Receiver / USB / iPod http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-KVT-526DVD...B0037KN71E http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-KNA-RCDV-R...y_ce_img_z http://www.amazon.co.uk/KCA-IP302-AUDIO-Ip...R1T9THP7Z4 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-KCA-BT300-...y_ce_img_y You can even add in a rear view / parking camera which i didn't http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kenwood-CMOS-210-U...H1ZN2A6GK4 Take a look, there are also some reasonable videos for this, and these types of Systems on YouTube. Why not just buy a cheap portable DVD player ?? Most important they can have headphones, so you can listen to YOUR music, and have grown up conversations. It also means you need a less complicated head unit, which knowing how secure a defender is will be a good thing? With the way technology is it'll move fast anyway. On our last long trip, my daughter was ingrossed with an iPad just my experience! Ps now have a redundant DVD player |

OK, I had a bit of time today to do some surfing and came across testfreaks web site. Seems like they have everything covered, thus making it easier for a car-audio idiot like me to get some good gear.
All I need now is a boffin on here to say that the following list is all OK, it's all compatible and if I plug all this stuff together I'll get a good sound. Many thanks for all the positive comments and tips for soundproofing to start with, alternative HUs, etc, much appreciated. I do think the idea of having all the "bits n bobs" (DVD, bluetooth) in one box is very neat.... literally! Multi-media Head Unit - £358 http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/car-multimedia/kenwood-ddx-5025dab/ Subwoofer (amplified) - £120 http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/car-subwoofers/pioneer-ts-wx110a/ Speakers (2 sets) - £130 http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/car-speakers/pioneer-ts-r1350s/ Amp - £136 http://www.testfreaks.co.uk/car-amplifiers/pioneer-gm-a6604/ Extras 6 x RCA cables (2.5m long) £72 20m Speaker wire 12AWG £80 IPod Cable £40 Connectors £10 DAB/FM/AM Aerial with cable & conn £65 Rear Camera £120 Total cost = £1131 Over the top? Mmmmmm, guess I'll start saving now then! Cheers LRmud |
