Mine always whistled well. Always driven hard and I sold it at 167thou miles. So maybe you've done some good by giving it a good clear out.

Usually (on the Td5's i've played with) if there's an exhaust stud (or two) snapped off, the turbo will blow by the manifold and cause a whistle.
you can usually tell by the black soot mark, but sometimes it's the end studs that are under the heat shield, so you can't see it. |

Hi
For the last week I began hearing a distinct hiss added to the turbo whistle. Verdict: cracked inlet manifold gasket. |

I was kind of hoping that the thrashing would have done her some good! I can't see any signs of soot etc so will just monitor it for the time being. Next to find out why my MAF sensor keeps failing, 3 genuine ones in 3 months!!

How do you know they have failed?
Have you returned them to dealer? I did and got refund. Do you have a snorkel? I ran Alive uprated (but cheaper) ones on my Td5 To check for manifold warp try tightening the two pairs of studs at the far ends of the manifold. When mine went it was not a low pitched whistle, quite the opposite, very high, more like really bad belt slip. Andy |

Yup, back to dealer each time as the part is guaranteed. Takes 10 seconds to get any engine power when its turned on while its searching for the MAF then reverting to default setting. No snorkel, and only a stage 1 map.
Cheers will go and see if i can nip them up this afternoon. |

So, just for my piece of mind:
a whistling sound from the turbo when accelerating is no cause for concern? Mine whistles, but no hissing or whining noises. All good then? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000 |
