Heated windscreen
Can anyone give me a recommendation for the best place to buy a heated windscreen? I was driving along yesterday and heard an almighty bang caused by a stone which was flicked up from a lorry and has chipped my windscreen unfortunately it immediately caused a 1 inch or so crack either side and is right in the middle of the screen. What is more upsetting is that it is the original screen on my 2001 Defender which doesn't have any other damage and doesn't leak so rather annoyed. Anyway I'm guessing it could be a good opportunity to swap it for a heated one? Is this easy and also has anyone successfully purchased and fitted a new screen themselves? 2001 TD5 110 County Station Wagon - sold

Any reputable windscreen firm can supply and fit, or a main dealer can do it. The cost of fitting the wiring (if it's not already present) may be significant unless you DIY.

I strongly recommend that you don't fit the new glass yourself unless you've done it before since it's very easy to break the glass, and you have no warranty if it leaks.

I understand your annoyance at the damage - on Monday morning an artic approaching me on the A388 managed to put his nearside wheels off the road and deluged me in gravel. My heated screen now has a massive impact, about hand sized, in front of the passenger, and numerous chips. Booked in for replacement on Friday. It is only a year old! Big Cry

PS if you are looking for a firm and intend to pay yourself (ie not an insurance job), try a local independent fitter rather than on of the big chains. In my experience the indy will be anything up to 50% cheaper. Also get a genuine Pilkington screen if you can.

Good point! A reputable indy will fit a new seal (if one is needed) anyway. A larger chain may well not.

The early seals were more flexible and had a better sealing shape than the later ones, however it is very unlikely that you won't need a new seal bearing in mind the age of the vehicle. My 2007 seal is now beginning to crack and will be replaced when the new screen is fitted tomorrow.

I went the insurance route to get mine, paid the difference between a standard screen and a heated one on top of the excess. I wired it up when I was ready. Doing it that way it is also logged with the insurance company if it gets broken again.

Another happy landyglass customer here too, he even fitted mine in the middle of Peterborough showground last year Smile He also sells a package with a mobilecentre loom, so it's really easy to get wired up if you haven't already got the wiring in place. Mark S

I had a heated screen from Landyglass fitted at CSK a few weeks ago. I then bought a Mobilecentre kit to wire it and found it really easy and trust me , electrics and me are not normally a happy combination !

I'm looking at getting a heated front windscreen.

I have looked at the options from VGS (aka LandyGlass) and also http://www.heatedwindscreen.com/.

It appears that you can get slightly tinted versions and clear versions. Which is better? My current screen is clear, would it look strange with a different tinted windscreen?

Thoughts / comments welcome

Thanx in advance

Paddie
