Hi all,
i am wiring up my glow plug relay and it does not seem to be working. My biggest confusion is about #4 from the photo below (white to any white vehicle harness.) My wire out of the wiring harness in the #4 position is black (not white) The glow plugs "clicks" on and there is power to all of the glow plugs, but it never clicks off, I have waited about 1min and there is still power to the glow plugs Even when it starts up and runs there is still power to the glow plugs. Something seems not right. Will continual power to the glow plugs over heat them or wear things out. Any ideas? Thanks Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

Hmm. I am not sure i have #3 wired up properly. I have it to a continual switched power source. Not connected to the starter switch
I am not sure the harness has not been bodged by the PO at some point in time. I am going by the relay wiring and wiring chart and not what colour the wires are I will keep playing with this trying not to blow up the relay.... Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

Success. When I ignored what colour the wires were and figued out when you flip the relay from the bove photo things are then backwards.....it worked just fine
I cant seem to get the lamp on the dash to turn on. Any suggestions here. If not I will just listen for the click Cheers Tim Series II in pieces 1984 Defender 110 (3.5l V8 now 300TDI) |

Is the bulb ok (sorry if you've already checked it)
Does the other side of the bulb have a supply to it? It should be a switched 12v, same as that to pin 4 of the relay. |

I checked the bulb with a power source and yes it works. So is the wire from the relay basically the ground? If so I need to wire up the light to a new power source on one side then hook the wire from the relay to the other? I did not try this. (If I had looked properly at the wiring diagram I would have known this....) Thanks

Yes thats correct, the relay supplies a ground to the lamp.
