High Quality Modulars
I'm thinking of fitting new wheels and tyres and fancy black modulars to accommodate 265/75/16 tyres.
I understand there are a number of manufacturers and want to make sure I source a high quality set.

Can anyone recommend a specific manufacturer to look out for or alternatively a recommended source of wheels (and tyre package if applicable).

Thanks Thumbs Up

Your post made me smile, apparently there is a dearth of real technical expertise available on this forum (and others) when it comes to wheels.

I look forward to seeing if you can attract a wheel guru to respond - as I too am on a learning journey when it comes to after-market steel rims.

Here's my advice.

If you can't fit the wheels with original land rover wheel nuts, don't fit them.

I used to have Weller Modulars on my 90 and they were generally acknowledged to be the best (they certainly never gave me any problems) however something that appeared to be common to all Modulars (not just Weller) was that eventually rust would form where the centre meets the rim however an easy cure to this was to run a bead of clear silicon around this gap when they were new and (if it was done properly) it stopped the rust forming in the first place.
Just done a search for Weller and don't see that they list the Modular for LR fitment any more. Sad ONE LIFE, GET IT!

I have a tip - DO NOT buy your modular wheels from JOHN CRADDOCK,

I bought a new set of modulars fitted with Cooper STT's and paid significantly more than any another supplier - I stupidly took comfort thinking that I was buying a better quality premium product from them - I thought John Craddock were reputable.

Within less than 9 months a significant amount of rust started to appear on the join between the rim and face of the rims. I emailed John Craddock with photographs and was ignored, I emailed them again and was ignored, I again emailed them and telephoned them and was curtly informed - "what did I expect for cheap steel rims" - they were not cheap though they were significantly more expensive than all of the other suppliers in the LRO magazine and also on the internet.

I would have driven down there and marched into their grubby store with the offending wheels - however a 300 mile round trip prevented that.

They also overcharged me when I bought them - charging me for larger BFG tyres, and reluctantly refunded me. Not a good experience!

and here is an example of John Craddocks 9 month old modulars:-

I have Dotz Dakars
http://www.dotz4x4.com/en/products/dakar/
which have proven to be excellent.
They also have an offset ET8 which means they have the same effect as spacers and with 265s you can adjust the stops to get a decent turning circle. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Shocked I hope you got your money back under warranty? It doesn't really matter if they think they are only cheap steel wheels, there should still be a years warranty for new products

nope absolutely nothing! I am still stuck with them - they told me to take them into the store.

I certainly wasn't making a 300 mile round trip and the other option was to take them off - the cost of taking them off, packaging them up, cost of carriage and being without a vehicle was a no go.

Absolutely zero customer service plus their attitude of what did I expect for cheap steel wheels - if that was the case they shouldn't be selling such crap - this was all last year, I have now given up - it simply wasn't worth the hastle following it up which is probably what they were hoping for

Thought this might prove interesting....

Thanks so much for the comments so far. Looks like one supplier to pass by.
Grouse, Im not surprised you are so unhappy looking at the photos. Thanks for taking the trouble to post them.

Has anyone bought from http://www.4x4tyres.co.uk/235-85-16/235-85...-1850.html
before?

I forgot to mention the Dotz wheels come with a German TÜV so they have to be high quality. Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Try contacting trading standards. If these wheels are rusting in such a short time, consumer legislation may assist...

To prevent that, the first thing I did when I got my new wheels was run a bead of silicone into that gap and let it set.

3 years on and still no sign of rust Thumbs Up

For what it's worth I also have a set of genuine wolfs of the same age on another vehicle - absolutely no issues at all - must be down to good quality steel and decent paint. The Wolfs were not supplied by John Craddocks either - personally I wouldn't buy a newspaper from them after my experience !
