Hello Paul Rover
If in doubt service it... I would say that the 1st oil change is an important one, it wasn't so long ago that typical 1st oil changes on new vehicles were between 1500 - 3000 miles, (my 1994 300tdi 90 was back at LR at 1.5k and my BMW RS 1100 was in at 1k) manufactures now argue that this requirement is reduced or absent, a Defender 1st service is 12K or 1 year, which ever is sooner, but if it has been 'punished' then earlier than this. Desert Storm Defenders were weekly. Depending on your thinking with a 'new vehicle', a common approach is to service with LR under warranty, maintaining the annual corrosion checks. The use of your vehicle will also be a factor for deciding when to service, but annually irrespective (almost) of mileage would be my approach... nothing to be lost in my view. If you do it yourself, check the metal gathered on the magnetic sump drain plug, it's good that it's there, but it has come from the ware of engine components... fresh oil will probably be the best thing you can do to your LR. Filters (Oil, Air and Petrol) + greasing all points that need it are obviously to be included too. SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Many thanks for the input everyone.
I have had my Defender serviced at the end of Y1 (£300) and Y2 (£450) by the dealership that supplied whilst the car was still under warranty but as this expires next month I want to reduce costs, and having been quoted just under £450 for the Y3 service I will be going to a reputable non-francised garage who looked after my old Tdi. Re the corrosion check I presume that this still has to be covered by the dealership? |

Since 2010 EU legislation covers a free choice for car owners when having their warranty cecks.
Take a look at p9 3rd paragraph: http://www.parliament.uk/Templates/Briefin...id=SN05060 |

It all depends on how long and how much you want to have fun with a Defender. Yes, the old TDi etc could be treated like and will run forever, but the new lady does utilize a Ford Transit engine and that one is like the difference between your grandma and your little lady ... Grandma runs on much lower maintenance, so treat the new little lady like a young lady - do the maintenance and the ride will be smoother, maybe even turning the lady into the next gen grandma ... Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel.
