Clunking wipers
Has anybody else had clunking from their wipers? My 2011 90 wipers sound pretty horrendous. The drivers side wiper spindle seems to have loads of play on it, moving in and out about 3-4 mm making the loud clunk when you do it by hand.

Has anybody had one of these to bits, I'm thinking maybe the shaft can be shimmed up, but having never had the pleasure of stripping one can't be sure.

Same as all the other wipers for 1000 years beforehand in other defenders... you'll need to strip the dash down, then get to the wiper boxes (little metal box, about the size of a matchbox) that the cable runs through.

On the back of it is a finger, punched out of the tin lid, which needs bending "in" to take up the slack, but you might as well strip them down to re-grease them, and grease the wiper cable too.

Jim,

Is the 'bend the tab in fix' a proper fix or by the time the dash is stripped out a new pair of wheel boxes and drive cable the order of the day?

Anything else to overhaul whilst its apart?

Renew both spindles plus the cable. Its a pig of a job.
Never try to move wiper arms by hand or switch them on when iced on to the screen. That strips the gearing. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

On my previous defender, I stripped the dash to bend the tabs in ,but by the time I refitted the arms, the tabs bent out again and I was back to square one.

In the end I used some carefully measured rubber fuel pipe round the spindle. You don't even need to take the arms off if you split the pipe and then cable tie in place. Worked as a long term fix in the end.

I had a problem with my wipers a while back but on checking the spindles, cables etc, everything was ok.
I took the motor cover off and found that the cir-clip that holds the bushes etc in place had broken and come off the spindle inside the motor itself. This was allowing the spindle to move about as there was play due to the bush being loose (if that makes sense)

A bit of a swine to get to because it's a dash out job, but it might be worth checking your as it's so new and i doubt something would wear so quicly, it cost me the price of the cir-clip to fix!

Another "quick fix" is to pull the cable out from the wheel boxes, then turn the spindles on the bulkhead 180' and feed the drive cable back in. This should give the spindles a fresh set of teeth to be driven by the cable.
