Blanking Puma EGR
Came across this on the Australian site. Seems they have found a way to blank off the EGR without the MIL coming on.

Not the first time this has been mentioned on here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/post348133.html#348133

In that thread, the view from the mappers is that the cleaning cycle should be left alone (which would be disabled by removing the gears) otherwise the valve will get sooted up and allow unregulated exhaust gas flow.

Also looking at the pics on the .za site, there doesn't appear to be any sensor in the mechanism; just a feed to the motor. Maybe the ECU is able to measure current flow, otherwise just disconnecting the connector to the EGR would do the same job? If it is measuring current, or at least not an open-circuit, then a simpler (and more easily reversed) 'fix' would be to use a resistor.

[Edit] Looking at the .za site again, the OP confirms that there is no position sensor in the EGR. Also he has blanked the EGR "on the intake side rather than the cooler side", so this is going to stop unregulated exhaust gas flow.

Good trick, but without the EGR the DPF now sees a lot more unburnt soot, which means it will need to regen much more. Would need to understand what that did to the regen cycles before you could guarantee it won't just clog the Dpf up.

ZA-spec Defenders do not have a DPF, so no issue for us Thumbs Up --

Interesting. I keep pondering getting my 2.2 mapped, for greater longevity rather than improved performance. Removing the innards of the DPF and the active regeneration cycle would be top priority.

Surely this would still result in the MIL light coming on as the MAF sensor won't like the readings that it is getting? I can't get into my head how removing the gears and allowing the EGR to spin however it wants is any different to blanking the EGR and leaving it operational? In both cases the EGR can still operate as it wishes just the gases are blocked at different points.
However I might be missing something blatently obvious! Rolling Eyes

Well....I went on a quick 1000mile journey this weekend to Mozambique and back. Did a lot of 80miles/h highway driving as well as some real slow going/low range, very thick sand roads.

Decided to just unplug the EGR at the grey plug.

Guess what? no MIL, no stored faults, nothing nada after 1000 mile round trip.

I probably had over 15 stop/start cycles during the weekend and no MIL, no limp mode.

So for now I am just going to keep it unplugged.

I completed an egr surgery on situ,much easier than unbolting the whole thing.
Previously I was running the puma with the egr unpluged,i was bored of the yellow check engine light so i tried this method and i have to say one thing..
DO NOT BOTHER,as soon as i cleared the codes with the nanocom,i started the puma 3 times in a row and the 4th time check engine lite again!!!
P0404 is my new companion now..

Yes, still perfect.

No lights, no fault codes.

It has now been over 2000km with it unpluged. Up here on the highveld the EGR is shut closed 90% of the time in anycase but when I was down in Mozambique at sea level there was a definate improvement.

I just believe that mine was not faulty and had the propper cleaning cycle. So hoping for a properly closed EGR with it unpluged.

Just something I noticed last night when I decided to test this again after it was mentioned again on the SA forum.

When EGR plug is removed some guys mentioned no stored faults can be seen.

What I noticed is that when using the UltraGauge to read the fault codes 0 faults is shown. When using the mobile app "Torque Pro" with the Bluetooth dongle also 0 faults is shown.

Using my Faultmate I can see the 4 or 5 faults logged wrt the EGR plug that was removed. (BTW there was no faults stored before I started with this test)

PS:

When I got my Puma in 2011 I also removed the EGR plug to test. I tend to remember the engine check light come on. (Not 100% sure). Somewhere in 2011 I asked the Land Rover Dealer to update the engine ECU software.

After this update I never tested to unplug the EGR until last night. I can also confirm that the engine light does not come on.

Not sure if Land Rover changes the ECU software on the later versions to perhaps not enable the MIL light wrt EGR related problems

Remove the gears is the same thing to blank the EGR leaving the connector inserted.....
